| Just a little side note on this matter. I was looking at the top 100 in a certain category and noticed one in particular near the bottom. I looked at some of the comments and people were complaining about aspects of the image. SEVERAL PEOPLE! Well, the image is in the top 100 in that category. So, it can't be all that bad. I guess the point being again and something that I guess I figured out awhile back, the image has to appeal to a large audience as well as be technically sound. You have to be able to get MORE good votes from a lot of people. I think there are certain universal themes that appeal to just about everyone and others where the subject matter alone will cause a vote to be low. I also think that people scrutinize images here more than they do elsewhere. The image you posted here, Zeke seems that it wouldn't appeal to a larger audience, hence the undervalued scores. Maybe if the actual flowers were showing in the image it would have. Just some food for thought.

The image Zeke posted (thanks Zeke!) was
selected by a panel of judges as POTD in the
Still Life category at Digital Image Cafe..
It is quite difficult to win a POTD at D.I.C....it was
my first picture to receive POTD there and I am
still proud of it. None of the "flaws" people have
noted here were mentioned by the photogrpahers
and judges there.
One of my main interests
is showing things people normally overlook. The rule
of thirds, the light coming through the bottom
of the vase/water/stems and the exaggerated
shadows due to the angle were what I was interested in. I have other shots from the same shoot that include the whole vase and flowers etc. (one of which won me $100 in another contest) but these other elements were
not the point of this one and I actually sort of
enjoy the intrigue of causing a viewer to
wonder what is above.
I would agree though that it is somewhat too
bright.
Anyway, thanks again Zeke and, of course, I agree with you about the scores!

| You know,,it is these conversations which just make me want to know all there is know to right NOW!! and this too is why voting is important,, though others have said the description can be distracting and the pic should speak for itself..well this might be true but I guess not for the beginner. I always feel like a dork when I miss certain aspects in a photo and normally I DO read the descriptions,,I feel it part of my "homework" if you will ..or duty when judging these photos. There are still some techniques that I am aware of that still will not win me over but that is personal taste...at least I recognize some "styles" or "techniques"...Hope to learn many more quickly... .. thanks for bringing this forum back up !!
