I can tell you I don't read the descriptions when voting.  To me, an image has to stand on its own.  If something is distracting in the image...even if intentional, it still detracts from it for me.

I agree - I even find the discriptions themselves a distraction... WE

Well, I think I remember this but cant remember what I voted on it..

I think the perspective is nice but it does not have a great flow for me..while  there are nice tech. aesth. aspects here , when I look at it ..

well I hop from "front" to "back" or top to bottom if you will.. so  looking at it now I would give a 6 or 7 prob.. if I havent already given it something else.

I agree with many aspects not being considered while voters vote..There are many albeit simple looking subjects to shoot..sometimes those subjects can be quite difficult to capture well..  One jumping dog comes to mind...totally in sharp focus...the timing for that one alone was just awesome..Now as far as this pic is concerned, I will also state that perhaps there are things here which only knowledge can enable the voter to consider..

And perhaps in time, I will have the knowledge to know of many things to consider.  I think this would be true with many voters.....wisdom .....takes time.

I have an image that is doing rather well. It only has 8 votes and until yesterday it was in the high 7s (almost 8). Well a certain high weighted individual who has NEVER given me more than a 7 voted a 7. I asked for comments and got a reply. The reply was that there was a certain distraction a vignette of blur around the edge. Well, the description clearly says "edges intentionally blurred".

A) What on earth is wrong with a SEVEN vote!!!!!That actually seems to be the most frequent vote for this image so far (5-7's, 1-8, and 1-9)

B) Just because you explain an effect that you use in an image it does not mean that the effectis necessarily appealing.

Granted the rest of the votes have been 7 and 8 so it's not an extreme vote in either direction but the the weight factor kills half a point on this thing.

Neither the vote weight or rating"KILLED" the average. With so few votes an accurate "average" has not been established (again 5 of the 7 votes rated this image a SEVEN!) I would recommend that no onefocustoo much attention on either a single vote or voter. It is not healthy!!! WE

I am not so concerned about the 7 as I am that I can't understand that pretty much no matter what I do this person votes 7. This particular image (and a handful of others), when shown to someone, made them want to recommend me for a wedding in July. Based solely on trust of the person recommending me, the Groom-to-be accepted. This was without asking me. When he later told me about this, I told him that I was not confident about doing someone's wedding. I lack experience and probably some technical ability somewhere along the line that I don't even know about yet. Anyway long story short, I said that I would do it under the condition that if the pictures turned out like crap, not to blame me. Otherwise they would have to get someone else. Since they have no budget, they are willing to take the risk. I actually think I will be able to do a decent job but didn't want to over-promise.
The main thing I am worried about at this point is making sure to get all the shots that a wedding photographer gets when he/she shoots a wedding. Cake cutting, father of the bride with bride, etc. This is off subject now so I go...

You can do it En!! Just take your time and remember get many shots of each of those situations!!

Breathe and dont forget to look for distractions in the frame ie: stuff coming out of their heads or too much empty space above their heads, ankles getting cut off etc...

lol..not that I am anyone to be advising but just breathe,,I am sure you will be able to get many very nice photos as long as you relax!!

remember everyone has their opinion and for some anyone's pics will be WOW though not for all...

Take advantage of this as a learning experience as well ,,it is valuable ...My only other tip would be to make sure others are taking pics and maybe you might want your girlfriend along too,,,just in case she see's something you don't notice ...two pairs of eyes are always better than one....but this is all just my opinion as usual!!

edited..: to just say that since this is the situation it works for both parties..usually those with no budget are thankful and greatful to have an alternative to those expensive wedding packages and as long as they are willing , then I think it is appropriate.

I looked at this picture several times yesterday and came back twice today.  There is one thought that keeps coming to mind every time I see it.  I keep wanting to see more of the vase and flower stems at the top of the image.  The hot spot is tolerable.  I'd crop some off the bottom where the shadows become pretty fuzzy, and maybe a little off the left side.  Colors and focus are fine.  But I can't get away from the feeling that half of the subject has been chopped off.  I think that would be considered a fatal flaw in any serious photography competition.

- I like the idea of discussing a certain photo each week...

- I would vote a 7 on the image posted here.... I quite like it. The half shown vase allows the imagination to wander a little.... I like the shadows too!

- Hey En, Good luck with your wedding... I'm sure you'll do an excellent job, and I hope you'll post some of your work for us to see

Tonka, did you know that the jumping dog picture was mine (I assume that's the one you're talking about) when you mentioned it?  Or was that just pure coincedence?

I agree with the desire to see more of the vase.  That's what kept me from giving it a 10.  It's funny though, because this photo won some very prestigious competitions elsewhere I was informed after I inquired about it.  It's interesting how different some communities can be.

lol..ummm no ...I cant remember even what dog it was just that it was a very well caught shot and was not rated as high as I expected.. Could have been yours or another's ...was a long time ago..But the point being is ;;;;; I have a dog, know alot about dogs and I know the difficulty factor is pretty good for this kind of shot.. Now mind you, I have little experience with all kinds of equip. .lenses etc... but still I always try and look at the difficulty factor and it is just easier if one has a little personal experience with the pic.

The image in this topic posted for me, would be easy to overlook some of the points mentioned.. just for lack of experience in this type of shot...
