What is the take on model releases for sport photography? I quite often take photo's at sport days, you have a lot of different teams competing and quite a lot of the "better" shots have recognisable faces on, but it is a near impossible task to trace the subjects - and worse - their parents (who are often not at the events) to sign model releases!
Any suggestions / ideas on this?

Jax, I hope you get an answer to this question. I've wondered the same thing. I also do some street photography where model releases are not feasible/possible.

| From item #6 of the DailyAwards.com Terms of Use - "You must have written permission to upload images with models or recognizable people." I don't think that this provision is very widely observed or enforced. Perhaps Eric would consider modifying it, or dropping it all together. I don't think the site bears any legal jeopardy as long as there are no cash prizes given. As a general rule, you only need model releases when there is a "for profit" use intended for the image.

And even when for profit, if it's editorial use I think it's ok.
As long as you're not trying to sell something (a product) with someone recognizable I've always heard you're ok. Art I thought was ok without (is always good to have) a model release.

| Thanks, Wemor, for the link. That's the most comprehensive and easily understood treatment I've seen. Of course, if any of that information is incorrect, we will hold you personally responsible for any and all law suits that result from our misunderstanding of the link thereof and spoken of and used of.
