oboy (5/18/2007) Richard, How much do you think is this histogram different from the histogram of the original image? The scan is adding noise in the shadows and highlights. So can you still trust the histogram?
No way to know! I'd have to see the original to tell for sure. But, the traditional approach to photography, especially in that era, was to get the exposure done well, especially with regards to highlights and shadows. If anything, the reproduction of this image probably caused deterioration of the histogram distribution. Just a guess, though!

Here is another photo for you all to rate.

I'll start off with a few comments, if others will follow. This is a classic "low key" image. Low key images concentrate on the darker tones, often conveying an atmosphere of tension or a powerful deep strength. This is the case in this image.
Although low key often uses high contrast lighting, most of the subject is likely to be in shadow, with relatively small areas brightly lit.
So, we can dispense with an analysis of the histogram for this. The point being made is good.... you can't just mechanically look at a histogram and assume the image is fine if the distribution is normal. The histogram on this image will have a peak at 0 and another peak at 255, with flat areas in the middle of the tonal range.
Composition is centered vertically, with the eyes on the rule of thirds line. It's okay, but I do prefer an asymmetrical composition.
Focus is good. Tonal range and detail on the face is very good. Probably a score of (8) on this image, unless it were in a "low key" category, then it would be (9).

| Okay,, I thought this might be that style.. I dont particularly care for this style..Though I really like the pose and position of the subject..I know 2/3rds is the general rule, some images do much better imo centered and this is one in which I like it.. This does have a lot of drama to it but there are highlights which are very distracting to me particularly on the face and just below the shoulder blade. I do like the lighting throughout the rest of the face though. This image is good but the "low Key" effect is not extremely pleasing to me though this is done well imo..I would have given it a 7.

| While overall, the first impression is very dramatic, I think I would be inclined toward scoring even lower than Richard. I dont care for the "low key" demonstrated here...the hair is almost lost, as is the upper hand. There is something (her hand?) in front of her face I find distracting, and I really dont like the circle of light on her forehead. I also find that the eyes are very gray with no "life" in them. I have heard from some people that they will overlook these types of issues when voting when the overall presentation is so expressive/dramatic. And too...there are those who break "the rules" and create a masterpiece. This particular image just doesn't appeal to me much.

I see the same things, like the light reflection on her face, the fingers of the right hand in front of her face, the disappearing left hand. But nobody is bringing up the textile hanging over her shoulder. I wonder if it looks different on my screen. There is no detail at all. It looks to like it is cut out and you can see the black background. I would give this a 7 because my initial feeling was "Uhhh I like this photo" but some seconds later I found the black fabric over her shoulder very distracting.

| Strange thread here. I vote the images that are IMO very good a 9 or 10. I vote good shots 8-9 and avg shots 5-6. An out of focus, cut off head, or very poor comp shot gets 4 or lower. No vote should be thrown out. People's opinions and tastes are different. If a shot is averaging a 9.5 after 60 votes and I come across it and give it a 5 or 6, why should that vote be automatically thrown out? I CRINGE when I have to give an image a vote of 5 or lower. When I do give the rating, I get a request for a comment...not once have I gotten a thank you or nice remark concerning my comment. In fact, if I get any response at all it is usually an ugly comment. Thanks,

That could get confusing. If you comment on a post directly, then the poster can reply with a thanks, which goes to your email, but answering comment requests is different...it is a one-way conversation, unfortunately. edit to repair quote
