Exellent move Eric. I look forward to using this when voting and seeing my favourite style of images in a larger format.
This will also provide a forum for those who like panoramic images. Does this mean that the proportional check (I think it is 2:1) will now be removed?

AndyS (5/7/2007) Does this mean that the proportional check (I think it is 2:1) will now be removed?
It sets the stage for allowing panoramas. At this time, the check will remain because it could cause some pages on the site to look strange. When I alter that, it will be allowed only if you select the "Panorama" category.

As a voter, I just want to say how much I appreciate the new, larger dimensions allowed on images. In my voting round yesterday, I encountered five or six images with the hyperlink to "View the Full Size Image". It was a joy to be able to take a close look and view the details of the image. Definitely helped the scores on several images.... the ones with amazing, sharp, clear details, contrast and colors. Probably only lowered the vote on one or two images.... the ones with some oof portions (in the areas which needed to be in focus).
I don't think there is a perfect "large" size. It depends on the image. And, it definitely depends on whether an image will stand up to close scrutiny. My reaction is that if you're going to upload a larger size image, then make it big enough to reward the voter when they click on the "Full Size" hyperlink. If the image is only slightly larger than 640 pixels, then the expanded view has only small impact. So far, my observation is that 800 to 1000 pixels on the vertical dimension is about right.... with proportions constrained on the horizontal dimension. Yes, this will cause some with standard size monitors to scroll to view the entire image. Some risk, but worth a try. To see the entire image w/o scrolling, all one needs to do is close the Full Size window.
It's probably possible to size too large. I think the 4000 pixel limitation was put in place to accommodate future panorama-size images, with more than 2:1 proportions. An image with a standard proportion will exceed its optimum presentation at much over 1200x1800, because it might be inconvenient for the viewer to scroll around a lot. And, unless an image is super sharp and clear, an almost pixel by pixel examination may not be in the best interest of the image's score.
Just wanted to share these thoughts about this website enhancement, now that we're a few days into the experience. Really makes the voting experience more enjoyable, too! So far, two thumbs up from me!

| You don't size up from a 640 pixel image - You just don't size down as low with your original image. What ever you do now to get your image down to 640 pixels (old posting max) just do the same thing with a larger number (720, 800, 1024...) Don't try to size 640 pixel images back UP to a larger dimension - that defeats the purpose of a larger image - you will lose detail. You should not have to worry about image size with an 8 MB limit on a jpeg image that will fit on the screen. WE
