OMG! I guess I didn't realize there was a critique request section outside of this forum. I guess I thought it became one with the forum. Maybe that is why there are not many responders? It is not obvious enough?

| To the left of the page is a button that says "Critique", this brings you to the request critique section where members have asked for a critique to receive one.. on the "my account page" when you upload a pic you can check the box asking for a critique (paying members i think) or go to the my account page , clik on a title then, check the "critique request" box and then hit update and it will put your piccie up for a critique... or use the forum.

wemor (3/19/2007) ...I should neither be forced to explain my vote nor be made to feel like a second-class citizen if I choose not to....
wemor, you always have been and always will be a first-class citizen. I support your right to not answer each and every request for comments. That is your prerogative. And, yes, comment requests do become burdensome from time to time. WE, you have chosen to vote unmasked, so you're on the right track.
That said, your situation is a far cry from those who never have and never will respond to any request for comments. It almost always occurs hand-in-hand with masked voting. And, it is truly frustrating to see a masked vote come in as an outlier low vote. (Sometimes, a gap lower vote.)

I appreciate and respect all votes. No problem with getting an occasional, or a frequent, vote indicating image revulsion. These things blend out over time. But, it is the principle of the thing. I'd really like to receive the feedback from those who found my image so objectionable. Maybe there is something I am missing. We are blind to the flaws in our own images.
The "1" vote illustrated above was from a masked "low weight" voter and accompanied by a "request ignored" response to my inquiry. Maybe this is simply a quest for anonymity... maybe it is something else. At any rate, the opportunity for me to learn something about my image was denied.

In this instance... what really do you think you could have learned from that voter!?! An obvious malicious voter is not out to help. Best to not even bother with those.
I am so far from knowing everything I am supposed to about photography. I obviously know VERY LITTLE about my camera, software, etc. What I have learned, I have learned by studying the work of others that I like. That is how I have learned what looks good (to me anyway!) as far as composition and such. There are times when I have had an image that just really isn't getting good votes. Generally, I know it's flaws but probably have a personal attachment to it and overlook them! But there are times when I just can't see why an image isn't getting as good of votes as I feel it should. Those are the times I ask for help from someone who specializes in whatever category the image is in.
I don't try to pick apart each vote... I take all votes in as a general whole. If an image doesn't AVERAGE what I feel it should, I ask for help to find out what it is I am not seeing.

HappySnaps (3/20/2007) In this instance... what really do you think you could have learned from that voter!?! An obvious malicious voter is not out to help. Best to not even bother with those.
Voters, whether casting a 1, or a 6, or any other below average vote, are basing their opinion on something! What is the value of this website to me, if those who can offer constructive criticism withhold their comments? Maybe I am not supposed to be here at all.
About the only reason for me to participate here is to learn from my image presentation errors. I don't really learn much from those who love my work (although I really appreciate those people). What helps me develop my skills is to learn a lot from those who see some room for improvement in my work. I have a lot of room for improvement!
When I first started my digital photography.... nearly 4 years ago... the first "contest" website I discovered was betterphoto.com. Each and every image I posted/entered at betterphoto received glowing comments. I thought I was really good. But, my early digital photography was very weak... technically and artistically. I know this fact now....I didn't know it then! The culture at that website was to give everyone positive reinforcement. Constructive criticism was literally forbidden. This was the most unhelpful environment I could experience. It retarded my development for almost a full year. I did think it was odd that I rec'd all those great comments, but never won any monthly contest recognition. Now I know it was a "vanity" photo contest site. It was a cruel hoax for a beginning photographer.
So, I sought out other contest websites that allowed constructive criticism. This jump required developing a thick skin. Learning to accept constructive criticism is a very difficult process. I certainly have room for improvement, but I have come a long way. Maybe this explains why I find withholding of opinions so obnoxious, especially by those who are willing to indicate image problems, but refuse to communicate.

I understand exactly what you are saying... and I agree with you, with a great BIG BUT ...
Whoever gave you a vote of 1... is NOT going to give you constructive criticism. Their opinion is based on malicious intent and disregard of any respect.
