| Daunting yes,,certainly...it was for me as well but I jumped right in and I think you benefit greatly by studying these pics, even if you have a hard time with the technical aspects like I did ..I think I learned a lot faster as the comments are similar to critiques... If you get many of them just keep in mind that alot of folks here really want to learn and are eager to and fulfilling the requests are one of the ,IMO, best tools here. Just another thought...(hey soosie !)

Thank you, ladies.... for the wonderful information about comment requests. I was just a little curious due to the fact that I was getting requests on images I had voted 7 for... and when I checked the overall stats, the average vote was also 7 with an 8 here and there... so i figured I was fair with my vote, but apparently not. I guess it all boils down to what your standards are.... Rarely, do I go below a vote of 6. And quite honestly, most of my votes are in the 8 range, give or take here and there, depending on what I see in the image. And I only request a comment, if I receive a 5, and sometimes a 6 if it's on an image that averages 7.5 or higher. So i'll just dive right in with both feet, and see what happens, LOL Thanks again!!!!!! And I hope you dont mind if I ask more questions as I move forward...

| Keep askin Sturgis!!! Your votes of 7 ,imo, are not unfair at all..I would wager to guess that the photog. would also like to know what you liked about the photo but what might have WOWWED it for you.. If an image has a great number of 8's on it, I would see a 7 as a very good score but just what little errors/flaws did you see that I or others did not.. Sometimes I will ask for 8,9 or 10!!! I would like to know where I went completely RIGHT I don't think that by general standards anyone should feel "backlashed" (better word here?) when they get a request...the request is general and so does not personalize the reason for it...(twas a suggeston I had awhile back to be able to specify why I would like a comment)..So it is not always about negatives..at least for me anyway... so just more thoughts on that.. ....happy pluggin lol..

| Welcome to DA Sherry. There is no obligation to respond to any Requests for Comment. As long as that feature is tied to a particular vote, it will always continue to be looked upon by some here as a means to force voters to justify their votes, and to surrender their anonymity in the voting process. Personally, I have never responded to any Requests for Comment and feel that it really is no one's business how I vote on their images, or why I vote the way that I do. I think my votes represent a much more honest evaluation of other people's works if I don't know who they are and they don't know who I am. The concept of the DailyAwards community is centered around competition but education is also very important. A better way to get constructive criticism of your images than requesting comments from voters is to use the Critique feature. That way people can give their critique of your shot and make suggestions on how to improve it without the burden of their opinion being associated with a vote. With the Critique feature you can get comments and advice from everyone who is willing to help, not just from the people who have voted on your images. I try to leave a helpful comment for every image I see posted in Critique.

| People who never respond to requests for comments are the absolute worst citizens. Ignore them! (I would ban them from the site!)

WillPat, I think that is very good advice. Not only are people NOT in defense mode, but usually the critique is left by someone who shoots the type of work that your image is related to. Not saying that everyone can not have a good opinion about all works, but some people have specializations. For instance, I would much rather ask MG for advice on a portrait than for help on a landscape... if you know what I mean! LOL

hahn23 (3/19/2007) People who never respond to requests for comments are the absolute worst citizens. Ignore them! (I would ban them from the site!) I think the Requests for Comment related to a vote are what should be banned. Let people vote as they please without the possibility of having to justify their votes to someone who doesn't agree with them. That way we'll get more honest voting and less inflated scores.
