I vote based on the universe of images that I've seen not the universe of images I've seen on this site. Ok so I don't give many 10s but I also don't give many 4s.

...the ever-inflating scores...

Do you have some proof of this?

My observation is that scores for all images have moderated considerably in the past three months. But, maybe you have some solid data to back up your persistent aspersion. I'd be interested in hearing the facts, if you know them.

Don't forget the fact that many images fall out of the voting pool, by design, due to auto-delete, manual delete, auto archive and manual archive. To the extent there is a constant winnowing of images, the pool contains better images. Still plenty of low quality images being submitted, which get low scores....they don't persist for very long. If you look at the site statistics, you'll see the distribution of votes looks natural.

Perhaps the real solution is to create a scale that goes from 1 to 23 or some other nonstandard score. It would force people to think in terms unfamiliar to them. Kind of jolt them into thinking of a score that seems right for the image.
I say this a bit "tongue in cheek" as I can't see it really happening, but anytime you get someone out of their comfort zone they tend to give more thought to things.

I have the perception, that a greater number of high quality images are being submitted to DA.... Since last August when i joined, till now, i have seen a stead increase in the number of high quality images. Much in part, no doubt to a significant number of talented photographers who have come to DA in the fall and early winter.

I vote VERY frequently.... I have voted more than 26,000 times. And i exhaust the data base frequently these days. Voting this close to the end of the data base assures that i see many poorer images that are weeded out by the auto-archive mechanism... BUT, I have still noticed an increase in very high quality images....

These are just my impressions, based on my voting habits.... Grade inflation.... I dont know... But my impression is that DA is seeing a surge in top rate photos...
just a thought,
Daniel

I to  have had similar experience with what seemed low votes based on the previous votes.I think judging images is very subjective one persons 10 is anothers 6.Several of my personel favorite images have not faired well on this site. While others that I didnt think would do well have .The thing to keep in mind is this is all just for fun and is a good way to see if images are worthy of being sold.I try to not let low ratings on any get me down and also try to judge others images fairley and objectively. One thing that helps is I never vote on images when I'm in a bad mood.So remember to have fun and try and learn from the votes and comments.

It's all going to wash out in the end. People who typical rate low, will typically rate all images low, so it makes it even. For everyone who rates lower than average, there will be probably the same amount who rate above average. This site actually does a great job with checks and balances. I belong to some other photo sites that are FAR worse than dailyawards. There would, however, be an issue if you thought a certain member was targeting your photos with low rates, but I doubt that's the case since your name does not appear with your photo upon rating.

I have to agree with Daniel. I only joined in December and have already noticed a significant improvement in the quality of images posted here.

Anyway, what is true is that the higher you are ranked, you have a higher responsibility when you vote since you can considerably affect the score average. I understand, and it is in another discussion, that it is impossible to comment on every low score one might give; but why not try to at least once in a while, to really try and help the photographer to improve. When you have a 7.5 average in a row of 10 votes (you start believing your picture is good and above average) and suddenly, it drops like a bucket of cold water to 6.5 and with no explanation. It is frustrating.

I dare not to talk about cheating because it is something that cannot be proven and I trust the professionalism of everybody in this site. But I agree that sometimes there is a sense of suspicion that arises from this type of scoring behaviour.

Anyhow, I have no intention of heating up this discussion, I just would like to give my suggestion on taking a little bit more of time in making comments on low scores, even if it means less number of votes. Especially you guys who are very highly ranked, believe me your opinions mean a lot.

Maybe an article entitled "Tips On Rating Accurately."

One thing that has changed for me is the question, "How does this photo fit the definition?"

I'm still pushing for rates 7.5, 8.5, 9.5

I have one piece of advice...

I used to archive or delete, usually before the 15 vote threshold for awards,,because the first several votes were usually always a GOOD indicator of how the image would do long run...I think that has changed of late..it seems the first round of votes is somewhat lower these days than, what comes in afterwards..

So I personally am letting the images stick in the pool for a wee bit longer than I ever have simply for the fact that opinions seem to improve later on . I hate to have too many images in the pool though, as I really do only put up what I think are my best , I like to keep it simple and I like to get as many votes as I can but lately it is just very hard to tell how worthy they actually are until I get a good sampling of votes.  I am not afraid to say, I am getting a complex lately.  And many times my requests for help understanding my image's mediocrity are being ignored.  self confidence is plummeting and I consider hangin it up for awhile cause apparently , my images are less quality than a year ago...

But I shall hang in there and cherish every comment given and make the best of it,,truly evaluating my work based on those votes without comments..geesh sometimes I really just dont get it.

I will try and just make it a motivator to learn more about my equipment and techniques. still comments would be nice.  (some do respond and I am truly grateful!)..  Okay just my thoughts here.
