Once again I have just received a batch of uncarachteristically low scores. Numerous low votes on a number of high ranking images within the space of an hour or so. Is this just coincidence?

umm..just a footnote....category awards are not based on the weights anymore...just the signature.. I mean the weight does not affect categories average scores....

Tonka (2/10/2007) umm..just a footnote....category awards are not based on the weights anymore...just the signature.. I mean the weight does not affect categories average scores....
This is not quite accurate. Both general and signature average ratings are calculated based on voting weight. Signature ratings use the full voting weight of each signature member for the average calculation. General ratings are still based on voting weight; that weight is just capped at the current signature minimum level. This is currently set at 24. So, general voting is based on voting weights from 1 to 24. Any weight below 24 cast votes at their current weight. Those at or above the signature level weight (currently 24) have their general votes capped at that minimum signature weight level. WE

See I knew the number guys would set me straight See I feel so secure being taken care of... let me rephrase....category average is based on just what your weight is which counts once edited to add; it count once according to your weight number...oh forget it , you know what I mean.*big sigh..tired* ...So a lower weight has a higher bearing than it did before... Do I have that right?...now..

| I don't want to name names, but one of the offenders has a very high standing on this site (weight well over 200) and has recently issued 6's right across the board. The other main offenders carries a weight of 42, but I don't think that's too relevant. I can understand the "newbie" factor playing a minor roll in low votes due to their naivety, but this issue always seems to come to light when images approach award qualification. I am still convinced that some members hold a dummy account which is used purely for targetting the competion. Newbie low votes tend to be erratic and evenly spread, targetted votes seem to come at a regular point in the qualification process and come in thick & fast. If this is the case, it's a shame that people have to cheat to gain recognition, but I guess it isn't just me that has this problem. My two cents (or should that be two pence) Geoff

Gesta,
A 6 by many voters is considered a GOOD score. A photo that has earned 15 or more votes and has an average in the mid 7's and below (as with your photos), will almost always have one or more 6 votes.... I'm not sure this is necessarily "unfair" voting.....

| Well Gesta you are not alone. Everyone receives low votesfrom time to time. Some peoples scales are just different than others. I vote a bit lower than the average myself. One of the people you are speaking about routinely votes a point to a point and a half lower than the site average. Do I think she should change? Nope! At some point all of the images will be rated by that same scale and it will all even out. It's not unusual for my images to have an average of 8 and have a few 6 votes mixed in with a few 10s. Try not to stress about it.

The Gesta (2/11/2007) ... I can understand the "newbie" factor playing a minor roll in low votes due to their naivety, but this issue always seems to come to light when images approach award qualification. ... Another way to think about this phenomenon would be to acknowledge that the newbies are right. They have a fresh mindset, uncluttered by what has happened here in the past, unaware of the ever-inflating scores, and not yet bummed out by getting bombarded with Requests for Comment when their opinion happens to differ with the group mentality we have developed. One could argue that this small community has become isolated in it's thinking; and that, to a certain extent, we have lost touch with reality and the newbies are bringing our feet back down to the ground.

| Well,,methinks it is important to think about one's expectations for this sight..What is it that you came here for and what is it that you would like to get out of it?.. sure the scores may be high here but those scores have come to mean specific things , at least to me. nothing wrong with the scale being brought down a notch or two(there is always room for improvement) but ,here is where I will go technical, if elsewhere has a scale which is largely populated by scores of 3-6, well that is basically the same as a scale geared at 5-8. When I was new I rated a tad lower..it really isnt "falling in with the mentality" that supports why my own values have increased...After voting so many images and learning ,one comes to an understanding of this sight's images in the pool...what merits it does and does not have.according to the knowledge base here.this is based on very subtle factors that not all will understand...I think this applies more so to newbies and those who started at DA first vs. experienced and knowledgeable folks with previous experience with other sites..My scale also does fluctuate,,this is natural because there is a learning process here...each new technique or technical issue comes to light and from there one starts to apply this new "eye" to the images viewed hence you have another criteria you look for in each image...either you see that particular tech. in the image or you dont...so another reason for fluctuating scores.. I can definately tell you that what is appealing to me today , may not be tomorrow..All part of how our innards work and fluctuate with hormones and rythm etc... I do not fully understand such compulsion to compare to other sites all of the time and how they rate images.. like I said whether it be a standard rating of 1-5 or 5-10..same difference in my mind... just some thoughts..
