Hey everyone...

Gotta question for you all..

I want to improve my voting.
Does anyone have any time or the gumption to maybe teach by way of giving out lessons..

Just an idea I had in my head..like take one element at a time..post links or have us search for info ourselves....then post a pic which shows the flaws, or not, and see if we can pick out certain flaws or merits?

or just post pics with known issues and then do a thorough search and critique highlighting both what we think are good and bad points..

but it was just an idea...assignments.

Hey that would be a great start for the beginner thanks for posting..

but I was lookin for something more along the lines of...

How to spot under/overexposure, artifacts, iso and ap issues. etc...more technical....
to know where I stand in my evaluation would be a great think..I think I do well but would like to know as much as I can ...I still have that occassional..ummm" it doesn't look quite right for some reason" feeling..lol...

Ya know?

Hey that was actually very cool...

BUT heh heh...

When I do not care for something I would like to be able to put a name to it...most of the time it is tech issues..some of the time it is aesthetic and the rest of the time it is both but I hate it when I cannot explain what I did not care for...
Maybe this is too general a question?
any other advice...?

Tonka,
I'd prefer that you base your decision on exactly what you have been basing it on. All of those technical issues aren't "issues" if the image can carry it's faults. IMO the number one deciding factor is if the image appeals to you. There are few images that you couldn't say where something couldn't be improved but in the end if it wows you you vote high if it does nothing for you then vote low. Don't get hung up in the technical aspects and lose your "eye" for a good image. It would be like playing Mary had a Little Lamb to perfection, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 even play with moderate skill is going to be more impressive.

Wonderful, artistic images with technical flaws and aesthetic problems should not attract your top score. A top image has to have all of the attributes of a winner. It doesn't work to have an image be "avant garde", but fail in the basics of the art.

Do you all think it is appropriate to just say "I just don't like the look"?

There have been images with some tech. issues but I rated high because the overall impact was quite nice...As a rule I will consider first impression, tech issues and then aesthetic value in that order in my votes..

I am not sure yet with things like...comments I have seen on other images, "aperature is too low (or too high)" ...this is just an opinion right? it depends on what you wanted to capture correct?

and sometimes, I am confused with underexposure...is something I think that is too dark automatically an underexposed image?

just as an example of the things I question...
