Hi everyone.  I am new to this site but so far I am really liking it   It seems like a great place to learn and improve.  I was curious how the numbers in the voting system line up to some of your personal judgements of "poor, okay, good, very good, excellent and outstanding."  Even though it is a 1-10 system, my experience with number systems like this has shown that everyone has a little bit different idea of what numbers coorespond with what judgement.  I was just wondering what some of your personal break-downs are or what some of you think the average breakdowns are for the majority of members. I was just curious because I would like to better know how to interpret the numbers assigned to my image and also make sure I am not voting other's images too low or high (I would like to know what I am saying with the number I assign).  THANKS!

Hi Christina. Welcome to the site - hope you have a great time here. You sound like a smart cookie. Thats a great question with a number of answers so I'll try to give you the real deal.

.

5. No-one really ventures below 5 for it requires a comment to be left. However bad a shot may be, 5 has it covered.

.

6 is for also rans. Snapshots that contain little of interest, tourist shots, family snaps etc. Members are generally unimpressed by a 6 vote - but unfortunately they are required often. The second most used vote.

.

7 is the most used number. It applies to all those shots that aspire to be more than mere snaps but don't quite make the grade. They may be technically perfect, but perhaps compositionally flawed, or vice versa. The pulse is not stirred. Beauty not quite captured.

.

8 is a pat on the back for a job well done

.

9 is for when you are stunned

.

10 is for images you will never forget - the ones you dream of taking yourself - the cream

.

Other people may have other idea's - this is what works for me.

Thanks so much. That clarifies things for me I didn't want to send members the wrong message with my votes!

I have already noticed that the votes I receive tend to be higher from members who have a higher number assigned to them and lower for people who have a 1 or 2. Is this a common pattern on here?
