Hi I got photoshop elements 6 few days back, and I was trying to create a panorama using that, as I started to do so the error message came up saying 'scratch disks are full, could not complete your request". What should I do? What are these scratch disks? I don't have any clue on this.

Hi Bhas, wish I could be of help. The only thing I can suggest is to go into the "Help" menu. That's what I do when I get stuck, usually find the answer.

Technically I'm not 100% sure this is correct as the programs I write are for automation of other applications and teh application I'm controlling does the bulk of the memory management. With that disclaimer....

When Photoshop, or many other programs for that matter, need more memory than the computer has they offload parts of memory to disk in order to continue. (truth be told it happens all the time and many use sophisticated cacheing to prefetch the next block so you never notice the disk access.) If you are low on disk space and or have other programs in the background it can get to the point that there is no place to off load so hence the "scratch disks are full" error message.

If you have images in the background, Layers that are no longer needed , other programs resident that aren't needed then close them and retry the operation. Additionally, if you leave your comp on 24/7, as I do, then you need to perodically restart it to clear up any memory leaks (space reserved by a program then forgotten about the program).

There are instances where programs will open temp files and never close them so you might want to do some house keeping if you are tight on disk space.

Thanks Joanna & Chris, and chris I am sure you are 100% correct, because it precisely happened that way, I didn't had space in my c drive so got warning message for that many a times, so may be that resulted in that error. Today I copied some of my files that were in c drive to d drive, so now I have enough space availble in c drive, so it should be alright now. Thanks again.
