OK, yes, I've been around awhile, but I've forgotten what value a comments has.  Is your weight affected according to how many comments you make?

If so, I've noticed some voters nearly always leave a quick comment, and now I'm wondering if they receive a benefit for doing so.  If they do, then this is a part of the system that should be  done away with.

Quick-commenting to gain weight is cheating IMO.  If comments had to be substantive, they would be more helpful and they would slow down the quick-commenters.

No, of course not! There are no tangible benefits of any kind. There are, however, lots of transcendental benefits to adding quick comments. I usually use quick comments and the comment box to add suggestions for improvement at the time of voting. It's a convenience feature.

Votes 5.0000 and below require a comment. I'm sure some members use the Quickies to fulfill that task requirement. Responses to requests for comments can be satisfied with a Quick Comment. Something is better than nothing.

But, mostly, comments on images are altruistic feedback

Hi Stormy, there is NO gain whatsoever from giving comments. Richard has been encouraging us to leave more comments when voting and appears that is what is happening. After all this is not just a competition site it is also to help each other learn more and improve our skills.

Thanks, guys.  The reason I asked is that I get a quick comment on nearly all of my photos from one person.  Now, I know that he's just being encouraging.

I may stand corrected, but my experience has been that votes of 4 and below require comments.  Of course, Richard may be referring to what he expects out of himself (not a bad standard to live by, if I do say so myself) instead of actual DA rules.

I stand corrected. Had to vote for a while to find an image deserving a "5" vote. But, one finally appeared. And, yes, I could cast a "5" vote without adding a comment. Guess I've always added a comment to images receiving my below average votes.

"5" votes constitute 1.26% of all my votes cast. (I think low votes disappear from the stats when someone deletes an image.

It's probably James Donner. He's a nice guy that leaves a lot of comments on my images too. NOt only does he make quick comments, but he takes the time to actually type his own comments too. I guess he's a good example for all of us. If you're reading this JD, thanks!
