I am a newer member of DA, and I have a question for the old pro's of the website.  I vote pretty frequently on images at DA, and I thought that I had a handle on the voting scale.  However, when I give a vote of 6, I am constantly receiving RFC's.  I understand that a lot of the photos on this website have 7-9 averages, so a 6 seems low to them. But, the DA voting scale states that any vote above 5.5 is above average.  Furthermore, if a photograph has a 7 average, that means that it has received votes both below and above 7 in order to generate an average of 7.  So, wouldn't a 6 be right in line with the other votes? I may be totally missing the mark here, thus my questioning.  I thoroughly examine photos before voting, and I consider my voting to be fair.  I give many 7-10's on photos that I think are deserving of them.  I just thought that a 6 was a decent score. Lord knows that my photos have has a difficult time rising above a 6! Anyone who can shed light on my question might help to appropriately adjust my voting pattern, if necessary. Thanks!

You voting thoughts seem to be pretty "spot on" to me.  I am sure that a six is my most frequent vote offered.  My overall average rating cast is around 6.15xx over 40,000 plus votes.  My most recent average for images active in the voting pool is about 6.55xx.

.

Keep offering the ratings as you see them.  You will continue to get plenty of RFC's for you six votes (not to mention fives! and some sevens too).  You may answer them or not.

.

The respectful approach would be to support the comment request system and offer your reasoning behind your ratings when asked.  I would recommend this tack but be weary of "raising your vote" in an effort to avoid the request.

.

Welcome to DA and Best of luck in the contest...   WE

Thank you Richard and WE for responding.  I will continue to vote in the fashion that I do, but will try to leave comments on my votes of 6, so that that photographer knows the reasoning behind them.  The voting graph was very helpful, and I am glad to see that there are others who have given images a 6! Thanks again.

But, the DA voting scale states that any vote above 5.5 is above average.

This is only true if you use the WHOLE voting scale. I have had this debate with another member here recently and she used the same philosphy. "6 is better than average" She freely admitted that her own voting scale is 5-10. Well in that case, 6 is not above average is it? If you do indeed use the WHOLE voting scale 1-10, than great. A 6 is above average, but far too many times, members vote 6 as a safe number. That does a disservice to the site because the better images start to get lumped in with the bad/mediocre images.

Edit to add 6 is probably my most used value when I vote, but I do use the whole scale....except for 1.

Hi there PL, ....

I just read your last post and I, personally, would like to encourage you to leave comments while voting when you feel moved to. If you have tons of time to spare, then by all means leave many but when you say you will try to leave comments on as many of your 6 votes as possible..well..WOW , I think that would be very hard to do! A six IS a decent score in most cases and it is in fact above average.
Many who receive a 6 should learn sooner or later , compared to other votes a 6 might fall right in with much of the average.

Many newbies may tend to rfc a 6 often but it could just be due to their enthusiasm to get feedback and learn, whereas, others might want to know what flaws there were especially if most of the other votes were 8 or higher.
Any comments you give should be appreciated and whatever you can contribute is commendable and so,
I just felt compelled to say do what you can and do not feel as though you are required by any means to comment on all or even most of the images you vote on.
Happy voting and....

JMO

Will, I don't tend to use a full voting scale.  The lowest I have voted is a 5, so I guess from that perspective, 6 is not above average.  I will take that into perspective when I am voting.  Thank you for your advice.

Tonka, thanks very much for your encouragement. I certainly don't have enough time on my hands to comment on all of the 6's, but I will try to do so when I can.  Or, at least when I know of a specific adjustment that could be made to improve a photo. Thanks again for your comment!

If you study the stats left by Richard you will notice that the numbers of votes left for 1 through 4 inclusive are 1/10th of 1%. Any notion that members are using the full scale to any degree whatsoever is entirely and demonstrably untrue. The true scale here is 5 though 10.

  • 5 for the real stinkers
  • 6 for the also rans
  • 7 for middling shots
  • 8 for the pretty decent shot
  • 9 for the excellent shot
  • 10 for the excellent + added Wow.

This is a rather crude view of the scale, and open to subjectivity - but its a fairly accurate reflection of the reality. So a vote of 6, also ran, is going to attract an rfc on many occasions.
