Hey Cherie, looks like Chris provided some valuable info on light. If you can master light, (which I have not yet) than everything else is cake. One point of advice I would give you is make sure the eyes are tack sharp. ALWAYS, point your focal plane on the eyes.

Thanks Will, yes Chris gave me some wonderful things and ideas to think about and practice..I just gotta wait for a peaceful time where I wont get frustrated...

The brown bkrnd just will not do at least not for me right now..I tried some regular lights and that just isnt a go lol..at least i know what wont work...my bkrnd, my lights and my tripod...kinda not my cat either....I wouldnt mind taken pics of her but she loves me and so needs to grab at my hands so I will pay attention to her..lol..pain in neck....

Now if I can just find the ladder and go unbolt the spotlight...

okay but for anything white or black,,ya gotta iron it right? or with the proper light the wrinkles dont show? come on here...gimme direction with this stuff...

I put on the 18-55 lens..I like the macro better cuz I love my 2.8 ....I do not seem to be able to even get close to this DOF in such a small place with the kit lens..

Does that make sense? or do I really need to read up on my lenses as well and their capabilities..

I am puttin this all on the table too again , so don't be callin me a moron here as I am being honest in case anyone else is in the same boat here.

When I learn this way instead of reading manuals, I really get it and it stays.

over and out.

LOL!  The cat part!  YES!  I know all about it!

Tonka have you tried moving your subject further from the background?  You wouldn't have to worry about your wrinkles as much then.

.

With the lenses...  Your regular lens will make things appear as they are.  Your telephoto will make things more compressed (less depth in your image)(I have read that this helps with subjects that might have qualities such as large noses appear better! lol).  I am probably not using exact terminology here so bear with me.  I have just recently acquired the 100mm macro so am dying to give it a try myself.

.

Will is absolutely correct, focus on the eyes and then recompose your shot.

.

Can't wait to go view some of Chris's links.

.

Oh, I usually shoot in my livingroom... moving around all the furniture...  generally with natural light, so I can't help you much on that.  That is something I am still working on myself.  The last time I did a shoot I shot on my covered porch... it gave a nice diffused light... nothing fancy, but good.

.

I have used ALL KINDS of methods of hanging the backdrops till I finally did buy the stand... was I ever glad when that day came along!  I only own one bonified backdrop... the rest are simply large pieces of cloth... much like your tablecloth.  Guess what gets used the most!?!

Man when  that cat gets a bee in her attention bonnet ,,,man,,,everywhere I go she pounces on my hands lol..

I was frustrated because I do not have any room..the way the house is set up is just nuts , I had hoped on expanding it by now but things didnt work ..oye..anyway if I put the subject where I have enough room, the front window is behind them which of course will not work as it is my major source of daylight.

Have fun with your macro lens...I tell ya I love it love it love it.

I do like the telephoto macro as well but I dont have a chance in heck of using that in my house...I used it outdoors to take pics of my nephew awhile back and I personally liked the results..

Okay  , I give up ,, do you use a sheet?, paper bag?, lol, an empty picture frame..hey now there is an idea....

thanks that makes me feel better that someone knows what I am talkin about with the cat LOL....

Maybe it is time to go back to basics...

STEP 1:  Put cat in closet!
