There is strong evidence signaling the vote buffers need to be adjusted. Presently, there are about 2,100 active images in the system and the 'all' buffer is set at 500. There have been cases of users reaching the buffer limit and getting 'stuck' because while they wait for new images to flow in, old images are flowing out (to the archive). Some of those images flowing out may be images that user has not voted for, thus that increases the time they must wait for the buffer to refill.
I'm not sure that we can completely eliminate the buffer, but I do think it should be less than 500 when there are only 2,100 active images. I am looking for ideas as I am not sure what the new value should be.

| Eric, glad to see you are back. You do not have to convince me of this as I have been saying it for some time. Is it possible for you to set the All Buffer to a set percentage of the total active imiages to account for the fluctuation in that number? Say 10-15%? Happy New Year!

| I understand your thinking but the size if the buffer seems irrelevant to this problem. . Those that choose to exhaust the voting pool will always find themselves in to be in the same position regardless of the buffer size. Even if the buffer was reduced to 50 images, those voters would get to vote on 450 additional images and then be right back in the same situation of only having the NET amount of New images (Net = Additions less archives and deletions) to vote on. The buffer could be reduced some but the larger the reduction the more it will just concentrate the first batch of votes every image receives into the hands of these most active voters. . Right now, with a buffer of 500 and between 50 and 75 new images added daily there is a 10 to 15 percent chance that any new image will be selected for the most active voter on any given day. If it takes 5 days for that image to earn 15 signature votes the chances are 40 to 60% that the most active voters will rate the image in that time frame. (this is very rough calculation!!!) . Change the buffer to 100 and there will be a 50% to 75% chance that the most active voters will rate the image on Day 1. There will almost be a 100% chance that these same voters will vote the image in the first four days. . This will place us back into the situation of most new images being constantly rated by the same voters. As well, these same voters will, after voting up any buffer reduction, be in the same position they are now; waiting for new uploads so they can vote again. WE

| Welcome back Eric. Yes, it's been a bit frustrating not being able to vote as I'm one of those who has hit the buffer. I think an excellent idea would be to have the buffer as a certain percentage of active images (5-10%) rather than a set number. Wow, I'm glad I thought of that. Just kidding. Excellent idea Robert.

| I hope the buffer for the Category voting will also be changed to a percentage. I would love to vote by category but it is pointless offering this option when even when I joined the site and had not voted even once I was still not able to vote by Category in over 50% of them and after only a few votes not able to vote on any of them. It seems the buffer is way too heavy. I can understand the reason for having a buffer but please can we have a more realistic one in comparison with the number of images per category?

| Again, voting availability is a function of active images and not buffer size. Even if there was no buffer in place at all the most active voters would be in the exact same position the are now. Voting pool exhausted and waiting for new uploads to vote again. . Reducing the buffer will reintroduce some old problems from the past and at best be a short term fix for those who have already run the table. . Any thoughts on the Category buffers? They are set at 200 and I am pretty sure that all but the newest members can no longer vote by category anymore.

| From the day I've joined I've never been able to vote in any category other than ALL. Today, I was able to vote on 2-3 photos.

| I guess what we may be missing is the concern of the active voters over this frustration in not being able to vote. I have it all the time. Frankly, if I get to vote 15 images at a spell, I amazed. I am also frustrated that it is not more. And if lowering the buffer enables me to actually vote more, even if it is only for the small period of time noted, I might be less frustrated (never going to be totally frustration free but it would help some, I think). . Note the top voters list, now at 75, is the highest it has been in several days. The site was inching towards a 100 names but has retracted by 25% or more. That is not the way the site should want to go. Not sure if it is the same reason for all. Just a thought. No formulas please, just a lower buffer. Let's give it a try and see what happens.
