Geoff, I see what you're saying. Maybe I'm in the wrong here but I usually rate on technicial merit and aesthetics. I'll look at an image and try to evaluate the degree of difficulty it took to get that shot, any mistakes made, any corrections that shold have been made, creativity, how unique it is, etc. For the most part, I'll look at the category but the category will have little bearing on how I vote. What I can not stand is for people or I should say for that person, that applies some simple water color filter to a landscape photo and still put it in the landscape category.

I'm very much with Geoff on this one - Category is of the utmost importance when judging a photo.......the "only" exception is the Other Category unless it fits easily within one of the other named categories.

If it does then I tend to frown a little about an obvious Nature shot appearing in the Other Category. If you're clever enouth to produce a decent image then you're certainly clever enouth to place it in the correct category!

Anything other is looked upon as you're trying to take the membership for a ride and you think they're stupid.

The membership aren't stupid and the majority of those that take their time when scoring will notice and and score a photo accordingly. The only exceptions are ....it seems.......if you know who photo it is because of the style or becuase that person is a buddy who always scores your photos high.

Ultimately, it's a case of other photo sites and the "blowing sinshine up each others bottoms" rubbing off on DA. That's a bad thing!!!

Stand by your votes but vote on them as you see fit and especially so according to how well they fit the Category - I'd go as far as to say this should be considered first and foremost - after which you can the consider allthe other aspects of a good photo.

Whatever you do - don't let anyone try to bully you into voting higher for their images!!!! Especially is their images don't stand up well within the Category in which they are entered!!

Anyway - well said Geoff!!

I can totally appreciate your viewpoint Will. I won't mark an image down significantly for being in the wrong category. i.e. if I'm hovering between a 6 or a 7 and the image is obviously in the wrong section then I will mark it down as opposed to up. What infuriates me is when people blatantly post sub-standard images into a totally irrelevant category just to obtain the easy win. I've seen humming birds posted in the NIGHT category (you know who you are) just to gain a little weight and an award.

On a couple of occasions..to emphasise my point...I have intentionally posted into the wrong category and added the image description "Yes...I am taking the p**s".
Surprise surprise, the images won. I think people should read the Title, The description, The category and not just blast through the voting pool feeling that they have done their part for DA.

Each to their own I guess, but the unexpected group is a total waste of time if no-one understands the reasoning behind the photo or the category.

Anyway...rant over and guess what...I've just received a "2" lmao. That's a first for me. I posted a vertical panorama with a little humour thrown in ( I have been advised that V panoramas may not appear correctly on some browsers), but a 2??? I dread to think what they're seeing !!! Should've gone to Specsavers (British joke)

I totally agree Sandy, fortunately, like yourself, I am not the kind of person who is susceptible to bullying. I do feel guilty that on occasion I may have appeared to be a bully myself in the past. If so I apologise profusely and I promise NEVER to post while under the influence again lol.

Geoff, I think what Sunshine Sandy is trying to say is that just because an image does well, it must be because it was boosted by friends, which is total hog wash. Eric has designed a very good system in my opinion that takes account for extreme lows and extreme highs.

So the member who dropped a 2 on you, were they anonymous or were they brave enough to show their identity?

I'd sure appreciate it, if members would vote on a contest image in the context of the category. For example, if you see a black & white image, it should be assessed as a black & white image.... against the other black & white images. It is not fair, nor objective, to vote on a black & white adversely because it is not in color. Come on, people! Each category has its own set of voting criteria. Category selection is important!! Allow the scores to take care of themselves!!

Richard - as you know I have great respect for you as a photographer and for your knowledge and general input. I don't always agree with you here on the Forum but on this occasion I could not agree with you more!

Will has a problem relating to a score received from me on an image.... that basically did nothing to compliment the category in which it was entered. He feels that I did him wrong by the score. I'm a fair voter but he doesn't think so.

I do not want you to take sides Richard (I'd probably lose out anyway) but "please" re-emphasise the importance of the Category and how images should fit into the entered Category.

Just maybe, he'll listen to you cos he's not listening to me!
