Today I disabled the private message feature and will likely leave it off until v3 is released. I believe that was causing some issues with the email system at DA.
In v3, the private messages will remain within the system and you will be able to view them (most likely) within the standard forum messaging mechanism.
Sorry for the trouble in the meantime. I promise v3 will be much improved over the current implementation of DA.
