Occasionally I try to capture good images other than insect macro's. I posted this and the first three votes were two 5's and a 6. It makes me think that my judgement is questionable when images I thought would perform better don't. Its not the low votes that bother me, I've had success elsewhere - but the fact that I cannot see what is so unworthy about this image does bother me. Can anyone point out how this image is flawed?

Glynn, I'm placing a clickable thumbnail here, which when clicked should open a new window (or tab) to the full sized image.

If you don't want this here, please let me know. I'll remove it promptly.

I don't know the answer to your question. Some voters do not find flowers interesting and rate all of them with a uniform low score. That's not fair, nor objective. Even if one does not like a subject, everyone should rise above their personal likes and dislikes and rate the photos for artistic and technical merit. I wish people would save their 5 and lower votes for the images which are oof, low contrast, poor lighting, etc. Your image is not one of those.

This is an above average flower image, with very good technical characteristics. I like the golden aphid nestled in the petals. The crop is tight on the blossom... by design, I think.... to show petal detail. The detail is very good. The background is nicely blurred. I find the colors just very slightly oversaturated, but not by too much. The composition does not seem to be quite balanced. I'd play with the composition some more. Overall, I think this is generally a "7" image. But, heaven knows I'm not an expert on flowers. My best flower efforts have been met with "5" and "6" votes, also.

I agree with hahn.It is a bit over-saturated and the comp is a little awkward. The biggest detractor for me is the yellow center, it's overpowering to me.The aphid doesn't really do anything for me as far as add or subtract from the image. If it was sharper it would add, but as is doesn't detract.

I'd say a solid 7 from me as well.

I agree also with much of what Richard stated..

For this image though,,petal detail is very nice but IMO it is a little "too in my face" mainly , I feel, because of the flower and it's crop(perhaps a little more room on the top would have been nice)...the brightness on the right side takes  some attention away from that beautiful little aphid..This color really is not one I personally like so that would have effect on me..Also I see a lot of this lately in the flower category,,The dof,,My personal taste is that I like to see a clear separation between subject and bkrnd in most cases..I dunno why,,When I don't see that it just seems like colors are "melted together"..  when this effect is in the bkrnd only with depth between subject and bkrnd , it is wonderful Bokeh but I just prefer that defining line I guess..

I would give this a 6 or maybe even a 7 because despite my personal opinion, the technical merits in this image are above average..focus , lighting , detail and subject are nice.nice catch of the aphid too and it appears to be fairly well thought out..

Of course , the vote too may depend on whether I am viewing this at night or during the day,,I have seen this factor in on many images...but I can only vote when I can only vote sometimes it is day sometimes it is night and sometimes I can get a little in both day and night..

All Just my opinion on it..

The 5's came from users with weights of 2 so
hopefully will be washed away after further voting.
Already a high weight has given it an 8.

To me it is nowhere near a 5 and significantly
enough above average that it has to be in the 7-8
range. I'd give it a 7.7 if I could but since I can't
I give it either a 7 or an 8, depending on which
way the wind was blowing that day.

It is definitely a good effort, in my estimation.
Perhaps a little over-saturated, as someone
already mentioned.
