| Hi, So not that I want to sound pissed off in any way as this isn't the reason why people put their pictures out there for people to enjoy, critic and in the best of worlds give feeback when asked so that the others can improve but what gets to me is how can someone actually give a vote of 1 on a picture when most people give it between a 6 to 9. I guess it's frustrating mostly when it doesn't come with a comments or feedback. I think a lot of people sometimes don't necessarily know what to vote on cause to give a picture a 1, for me, that would mean that it's a white dot in a black back ground with no focus, no light, nothing. So again I ask, why????? Anyhow, I guess I'm surprized cause it just happened and I don't know why. The goal is to improve and this just doesn't offer this. Sorry for being bitchy on this one but I'm sure anyone could understand. Is there a way, in this system, for people voting really low ( 3 or 4 and under) to ask them to justify themself right away. Somekind of default procedure within the system. Cheers

| On a light note ... If you post a picture with a date in it ... I will give you ONE! That's just me ... Since we don't know the picture in question, it's hard to put in an educated opinion. It could very well be a malicious vote ... I know I am just absolutely no help here. So long then. Lukas

Lukas, I guess I'm missing the lightness in your comment and I
hope that when you say, "That's just me", you are correct. To me it seems
pretty harsh and unreasonable, to say the least, to give a 1 merely for a date.
Taking off a couple of points and leaving a comment about the
date being a distraction would seem more appropriate. But then...
That's just me.
Just like all of us when we started out , people new to photography will
make this sort of mistake. They need to be coached, educated and encouraged.
Giving a 1 rating is more like a slap in the face and does border on maliciousness, in my view, unless the picture was only a 3 to begin with.
Anyway, I do hope you will always leave a comment about the reason for
your 1 rating if you do continue voting in this manner.
Fremme, which picture is it? Can you provide a link to it?

Nick, you are absolutely right here and I appologize to everybody who didn't get my old joke. I forgot that the majority of people here these days weren't here at the beginning. In the old days we were stumbling across dates in images very often. Then one day I posted publicly that this wasn't ment to be a family album and that I was going to vote 1 for every date in the pool. It wasn't right back then, however, people somehow took it as a hint and believe it or not they didn't crucify me for that. These days, 1 votes are probably even descarded anyway and indeed, in reality, I haven't been giving one votes at all since then. I also felt that I owed to the comunity to back off and be reasonable again. Take care, Lukas

| Hi, I agree with all of you in regards to having a date in a picture as beeing a NO NO but I can't remember the last time that happened. Here's the picture in question : http://www.dailyawards.com/imgstats.aspx?ImageID=45597 Like I said, my objective by coming onto site similar to this is to learn and have an idea, share and see how to improve. Having a picture rating of 7 for example isn't my issue but learning how to improve it and bring it higher is my goal. There you have it and this is why getting a score of 1 when most people score it between 6 and 9 doesn't make sense and a simple solution like I mentioned would be to get people to live feedbacks by default when scoring a picture lower then 3 for example. Cheers

Fremme,
I looks to me that the 1 vote you picked up was a malicious one!
To be quite honest with you, this really isn’t a website designed for learning.
As the name suggests it’s a site for winning! The whole site is geared up for voting only, seldom will you get comments left on your work other than the ones already built into the system. ie, Quick Comments.
There are a number of other websites that cater for the beginner.
It’s on these websites that you will learn good technique, composition and lighting.
Receiving votes alone doesn’t help the novice get any better they need to understand why a certain image has received a 5, 6 or a 7. Only then can you question why a lower vote has been cast.
The only way to relieve this situation is as you say when a vote is cast below a certain level a detailed critique should be applied.
A good photograph is one that touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it.
