Just posted a new How to: Size Your Image for Contest Success article.

It's a first draft. I am receptive to suggestions for improvement. I think this could help newer members who struggle with preparing images for competition.

Now we're making progress! That is the right question. This is really super important to image presentation. I'll write another article, but it might not get published until tomorrow, as I have good quality & colorful light in the mountains today.

Excellent article Richard - very well done - sure to help many people that are not so used to the process.

With regards to Un Sharp Mask - I have to admit that I rarely use it because I find it difficult to determine the best settings: Sharpen Amount, Pixel Radius and Threshold. Can anyone relay an optimum setting?

Whenever I decide to sharpen I tend to use the default Sharpen though Unsharp Mask would provide me with more control.

Seriously, I've seen myself playing about with the Unsharp Mask for hours until I get "sharpen blind" and can't tell the difference between one setting and another.

Oh, I don't use Photoshop - I use Macromedia Fireworks 8.

lol it is still a good thing to learn,,

many can benefit from learning about the usm...I should have known what it was though, I learned that from Richard a looooong time ago and have used it since..I believe Hahn had written about that in the old forum?..

I find though that there are many situations where I have to choose the best route though..sometimes it is the USM and sometimes it is just the Sharpen just depends on the situation,,but that is jmo..

I understand Tonka - personally, I sometimes get annoyed with USM because of my indecision
........sometimes I get lazy and the default sharpen mode looks ok to me, .........sometimes...increasingly, I don't even bother with either.

One would hope that a lot of research has been done to determine the optimal "default sharpen" mode though eh?
