There is no built in link to view your own large images. Get the image number from your ALL IMAGES page and substitute that number in place of the xxxxx's in this Address. This will open a window and allow you to view your "large" image. WE

I did not think about setting the background. I can make that change but it might be a few days before I get to it.

Okay WE:D

I did try and upload one I sized down but it was larger than 800,,and I thought (I was wrong) it was up to 4mb...the image was taking forever to upload,,yes I have cable...so I just thought I had gone over the 4mb limit but since it is 8 I guess I just need to wait...

and O, I agree very much,,the bkrnd color can make or break a photo..weird how that is isnt it?..

Eric,

please use the background color for the large image view as it is defined for the selected image in the "update image" page.

It is all about presentation. I think that presentation places unconsciously a big part of the deciding process for finding the right score for voting.

Here an example how you would see it similar in the voting window:

I think the different background gives the photos different feelings and have different colors within the photo pop out.

You don't size up from a 640 pixel image - You just don't size down as low with your original image.

What ever you do now to get your image down to 640 pixels (old posting max) just do the same thing with a larger number (720, 800, 1024...) Don't try to size 640 pixel images back UP to a larger dimension - that defeats the purpose of a larger image - you will lose detail.

You should not have to worry about image size with an 8 MB limit on a jpeg image that will fit on the screen. WE

What do you do if you want a larger image but cannot go above the 800 because the mb are above the limit..Can you tell me how to size an image larger than 640 ...in other words..?

It sets the stage for allowing panoramas. At this time, the check will remain because it could cause some pages on the site to look strange. When I alter that, it will be allowed only if you select the "Panorama" category.

Exellent move Eric. I look forward to using this when voting and seeing my favourite style of images in a larger format. :)

This will also provide a forum for those who like panoramic images. Does this mean that the proportional check (I think it is 2:1) will now be removed?

I took some significant steps recently towards protecting the identity of the photographer on the voting page. In short, it is now impossible to figure out who the photographer is by using the data given by the system while voting. Anyone can, of course, make a guess based on the subject or style, but it is now just that, a guess.

I would like to see if this change makes a difference in the kind of behavior that is reported here occasionally.

As well as the "apples to oranges" concern that wemor has raised, I wonder about how my images will look to the viewer/voter. If I edit them to look their best at 640 (which I think is what most voters will be seeing) will I be missing out on the advantages that the larger version can bring? And if I upload a 4000 version, how will it look when the system automatically downsizes it to 640? Maybe I've missed something but it seems that the photographer will have to surrender control of the image's appearance at one size or the other.

Won't viewing a large image file at full size require scrolling, possibly in two directions? Are people going to bother to do that when voting?

Eric, if you are in the mood for trying new things that may or may not work out in the long run, how about trying a voting system that is very much more anonymous and very much less transparent. Isn't that as worthy of a trial as large uploads? I understand that this probably goes against the idea of giving more to the paid subscribers, but there are other things that could be granted to them, things that would not give an advantage in the competition. Or just go to an "everybody pays" site and forget about having separate classes of membership.

I felt that requests for large image uploads were correctly addressed in the past when so many good reasons to keep the size as it was were brought forward. My perception is that many more users are concerned about the "level playing field" issues than the ability to upload larger images.

That had previously been my sticking point. I feel it is most fair to compete on an absolutely equal field. However, after thinking about this further, I decided my perception holds no validation, and the only way to know is to try.

In reality, having a larger version of the image could harm at least as frequently as it could help. putting an image under a magnifying glass may reveal flaws that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

So, I've decided to just give this new concept a try. If it does not work out, it is easy to hide the larger resolution versions from immediate view.

If YES, is this fair in relation to the contest for the non-subscriber? Will we now be comparing apples (almost unlimited image size for subscribers) and oranges (640x640 pixel max for non-subscriber)? While I believe that there should be some features and distinctions for subscribers, I always thought that it was important with regard to the photo competition that everyone competed on an equal basis. WE

Yes. For images that are stored at more than 640 pix in the wide direction, a hyperlink will appear right under the image to take you to the larger version. I will create the same hyperlink for the image viewer page.

Edited to add: I will add that function to the image viewer page in the future as it needs some other modifications first.

I think up to 8 MP you should be fine ... I know that 4,000 x 4,000 is 16 MP, but my 8MP camera captures 3,456 in the widest direction (2,304 in the narrow makes for about 7.9 MP).

If it needs to be moved further, that is no problem. Also, I have set the file size limit to 3 mega bytes. Which should be plenty for most .jpg images, but that value can be moved as well.

For subscribers, I have modified the site to allow larger images (4000 pix instead of 640). This is a feature that has been requested multiple times so here is my reasoning:

1) When voting, all images are shown by default at a max of 640 in any direction
2) By limiting to subscribers, it helps to offset the system load
3) It is quite easy to reverse this change by hiding the full-sized version.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems with this recent change.
