Google Checkout is a good service for consumers and merchants. This service allows the consumer to store his or her personal data in a single place and purchase from multiple stores. Imagine if the only company who needed your cc# was your bank and in turn they would take care of paying anyone you wanted.

Nevertheless, I understand if you do not trust the service, it is good feedback for me to see how many users share this view. Anyone who wishes to have the free month and bypass the checkout process can PM your CID to me, as mentioned earlier.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

Hey Eric - Thanx and Happy B-day to DA!!! If that is one way that Eric is getting money to help support this website, then say so. Probably I would have cooperated. But I am going to turn my back on the free month as long as the terms and conditions for getting it are different than what I was led to believe. I may be the only one who does so, but I have a strong sense of ethics and feel something is amiss in this instance.[/quote]
You are not alone kendp. I am not yet a subscriber, and I was going to take advantage of the free month to see what it's like to be one. But after reading this thread I've changed my mind. I feel that the "no strings attached" was a little bit misleading, but Eric has explained his logic for the checkout requirement. What bothers me more is the idea of giving up all my personal info to google and not knowing the consequences of that. I don't think google would leave it vulnerable to hackers or thieves, not worried about that. But google checkout is relatively new and we don't have any idea how our personal info will be used. I like google, use it often. But remember that they are the ones that read your e-mails if you have a g-mail account to troll for info that they can use and sell for targeting advertising. And they are the ones who resisted the inquiries from the federal government because they wanted to keep their inner workings secret. I would like to let google checkout develop a track record before I trust them. I'd also like to see the site offer an alternative to using credit cards online to pay for subscriptions. More ways to pay would probably mean more paying subscribers.

Eric, if you are allowing google to gather all of our personal info and not getting anything in return from them, I would say that google is taking advantage of you. That info is valuable.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

Eric, I don't doubt that the offer was well meant. And I appreciate the offer. I agree there needs to be a system so you will know how many take you up on your offer. I also agree that those who want to apply this coupon toward a paid membership need to process it through PayPal or a credit card.

Had a rebate been offered, I would probably have gone through the check out process and claimed my rebate.

I like things to be clear up front. This wasn't, I found out when I went to claim by free month, and that is what I am objecting to.

Had you asked whether we want to claim the free month, or whether we want to have a rebate on a new membership or an extension of an existing membership and directed those wanted to sign up or extend to the Google Check Out, I would have had no question about the process. You would know the names and the number of person who just wanted the month by their response to the question. And you would have the response to the question and subsequent check out info to give you the desired count of the members who elected that option.

It is not too late to make the change. I hope you will consider it.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

"Refunding the $3.50. This includes subscribers, like myself, who want to add the 1 month to our subscription, or non-subscribers who will test the benefits of being a subscriber and then decide whether to subscribe. It is not necessary for these members to go through check out.

oiboy, this is not a rebate. Nor is it, as was indicated in the message from Eric, a gift with no strings attached.

ScottySue, it is not that I am reading too much into it, but that I apparently didn't read enough into Eric's message. If very few are used, it tells me that either people do not like the new payment system or they do not read / get email from the site.

There is no incentive from Google for processing these $0 transactions through their systems. I do understand your point as I have dealt with many questionable companies in the past (as we all have). If I wanted to run a slimy business however, I would set the subscriptions to auto-renew, send regular promotional emails full of ads, trade contact information with 'advertising partners’, etc.

My intentions with this coupon are truly well meant. I tried to be as flexible as I could with this by allowing all members (even if you have already purchased a subscription) take advantage of this and allow you to use it for any purchase on the site, including image uploads.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

NIKI!!!!!:D

HEY YA! See it like a "free after rebate". When you buy something somewhere with a coupon and it becomes free, you still have to go through the complete checkout procedure. If Eric really wanted to say thanks to me for participating by giving me an additional month, he could have easily done that without requiring me to go through Google Check Out.

I am sure that Google pays something to Eric for each person that goes through the checkout. If that is one way that Eric is getting money to help support this website, then say so. Probably I would have cooperated. But in this case I am not purchasing anything, only attempting to add the extra month to my subscription that you were kind enough to offer.

Quoting from your message:
"As a way to say thank you for being a part of the site, every user can pick up a coupon for a free one-month subscription! Just visit the homepage and click on the birthday link at the top of the page! There are no strings attached. Just make sure you add your subscription before the end of the birthday celebration (1/31/07).

"I hope everyone takes advantage of this and has an opportunity to try out the advanced features at no charge. If you currently have a subscription, pickup the extra month and add it on to your current term, or use the coupon for adding image uploads."

With that in mind, I went to the website and clicked on the link, only to find that even though I only want to add 1 the 1 free month to my subscription that I must enter all my credit crd information. In otherwords, despite what is said in your message, there is a string attached to the offer.

This is made even clearer in your response to my first post when you informed us that you were requiring us to check out with Google in order to introduce this to us.

So what is the reason for offering the 1 one month? Is it to say thanks, as you said in your message, or is it to get us involved with the Google Check Out System? It seems that it is the latter.

Why was this not made clear in your message to the members? Why sneak it in through the back door?

I don't often look a a gift horse in the mouth, but this is has become an offer I can, and am, refuse. I'm sorry, Eric, because I admire what you have done and are doing with this website, but I feel that I have been misled.
RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

The only way the site processes subscriptions is through the Google Checkout service. This is integrated with DA so that when a new subscription is paid for, it will show instantly.

I would like for everyone to become familiar with the Google Checkout system, therefore I require you to process your transaction through them.

Google Checkout is a good service for consumers. It has many privacy and security features built in. In my opinion, there is much less risk in using their system than giving your card to a waiter at a restaurant.

For anyone who has used this service, perhaps you can comment on the positives and negatives you find.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

Eric, I appreciate the offer to add 1 month to my subscription, but I object to have to enter my credit card information to do it. If this offer is really to say thanks to the members who are helping make the website a success, as you indicated in your letter, and not a means of promoting the google credit card (which I know they are working hard to do), there should be some way that those of us who are already subscribers can get our gift from you without having to enter all our personal information.

RE: DailyAwards.com Birthday Celebration

Eric, Thank you!
