I agree with most of what you have said.

It does not surprise me that score should be a bit lower in challenges since, if you are following the spirit of a "Challenge"(expanding your horizons) then perhaps your results will not be up to the quality that you normally produce.

RE: Question about Voting in Challenges

This is how I vote on challenges, probably not the "right" way, but I feel very strongly about challenges as well, I see it as a homework assignment, the subject of the assignment MUST be adhered to :

EACH IMAGE JUDGED AS FOLLOWS :

1. Relevance to the challenge
2. Focus & clarity
3. Technical merits (which includes level of difficulty & creativity)
4. Aesthetics
5. Originality & Effort
6. Over all impression

Roughly explained all start out on an equal 5, if they are relevant, then steps 2 to 6's points are added which can bring an image up to a 10. If it is totally out of focus it loses points and steps 3 - 6 falls away, usually bringing it down to 3.

I immediately give a sub 5 score to the following images :

1. Obviously not relevant to the challenge, after CAREFUL consideration to all possible angles,
2. Images repeated within different challenges WITH NO RELEVANCE TO THE SUBJECT OF THE CHALLENGES
3. Snapshots
4. WHAT THE HECK images where the focus is so totally off or the noise so scary you can hear it if you hold your ear close enough to the screen.:P I think sometimes it must be those images you don't get to vote on in the regular contest because they are deleted long before you get to them.

Okay, ready for the firing squad......

Question about Voting in Challenges

First, I don't know if my question belongs here or if it belongs under "Ask Questions", so please let me know...

Ok, do you vote with the same criteria in the Challenges as you do in the regular voting? I hope I don't offend anyone, but by and large the quality of the photos are not as good as what we see in the regular competition. I find that I tend to vote more along the lines of how this photo compares with that photo. I still consider technical/creative merit, but I also compare. In regular voting I try to never do comparisons and rather vote on each photo on its own merits.

I also find that I vote much higher in Challenges than in regular voting, mainly because I'm putting a much higher weight on how well the photo embodies the category.

So, what do you do? Do you treat challenges any differently than the regular competition? Is my voting style off base?

Thanks for your help!

Kathleen
