That white jacket they gave you to wear is because you are SPECIAL. And those three men in the white coats who came for you today, did it because you are SPECIAL:P

RE: Image Quality Uploads

I did a little study with this on one of my images recently.

I uploaded an Architecture shot, 2000 at it's longest end and asked voters to view the full size image. I also sent RFC's to those that voted to ask if they had viewed the image full size and confirmed that their vote wasn't the reason for the RFC.

It proved very interesting and helpful so a Huge Thank You to those that took part! (Note that most did - maybe something to do with me making it clear I wasn't asking for them to justify their vote.)

Findings so far show that very few people will view a full size image when voting.

Some will only view certain Category large images such as Panorama and Macro.

Obviously, results will vary a little depending upon the voter.

The reason for the study was that I personally, very rarely view a full sized image unless it's in the Panorama Category or if I'm struggling to score it. (If the larger image is better or worse than the voting window sized image then I find it helps me to make up my mind what to score :) )

So, I was basically trying to find out if I was normal....or not. :D And whether it was worthwhile uploading full size images - it doesn't look as though it is really.

I'd very much like to see the voting window size increased to a standard 800 x 800.

Certainly, in the past, as we had so many images in the voting pool, it would have been difficult to do this due to the demand on resources but with fewer images now would this not be less of a problem?

RE: Image Quality Uploads

The max size the vote screen will display is 640x640 pixels.
.
Everyone may upload images up to 1024x1024 pixels. The vote screen will downsize larger images to fit the 640x640 vote screen display.
.
Subscribers may upload images up to 2048x2048 pixels. The vote screen will also downsize these images to fit the vote screen (640x640 max)
.
When a larger image is uploaded the voter has the option to view the larger version (1024^2 or 2048^2) when voting. This additional size view may offer an advantage if the image contains great detail and presents at a high quality on the screen. It can also pull the image down if the larger view does not come across as a higher quality image. Larger images also are processed through the site's image resizer where changes in display quality could arise.
.
Personally, I like to compare apples to apples, so while I may view the larger image post, I do not take them into account when voting. I feel the contest should remain on as equal a ground as possible, therefore I determine my vote before viewing the upsized images ( the one exception being panoramic shots).
.
At any rate, I would suggest trying to avoid uploading images that will display larger than the average computer monitor (again the exception being pano). I have found that most voters favor being able to view the entire image on their screen without having to scroll to view only portions of the image at any one time.

Image Quality Uploads

Can someone please explain to me the advantage that paid subscribers have when it comes to the quality of images uploaded. I know the image must still be 640 by 640, but the subscription page says something about paid members uploading pictures with more pixels.

I'm not sure I understand that. (I'm still fairly new to digital photography and I'm learning loads of stuff from DA)

Steve Fandel
