That's not padding - guess those FOURS were for some other reason! :D

Padding is adding some additional pixels to the smaller sides of your image in order to bring the aspect ratio up to the required 2:1 posting standard.

Preferably the padding would match the page b/g and contrast with the image itself in order to better present on the page (and avoid Happysnaps wrath!)

Maybe I don't understand "padding". This is what I DO NOT like: I DO NOT like to NOT KNOW where an image begins and ends. Say, for instance, the page is black, then you have an image of a flower with a black background. All I see is this flower on the page, I can't distinguish the composition of the image because I don't know where the image begins and ends. Am I supposed to judge the entire page in a situation like this? Consider all of the items on the page (titles, descriptions, last image voted on...) part of the image? Yeah, I know, that is an exaggeration, but I am trying to prove a point.

I have and I always will count off for this.

OMG! Guess that explains the two FOURS! you voted on my examples! I'll know better next time... Seriously, if done correctly, how do you even know an image has been padded?

Alan - you're doing yourself proud!! Very well done to you!!!

You've managed to advance because of the votes received from your fellow photographers. We/they obviously have a great respect for the images that you're producing - keep them coming!!

I think it's Martin Kemp's bird images that have impressed me more recently - due to the sharpness and crispness of the shots....very, very impressive! However, Alan has been doing great and I've certainly got much admiration for both the images that he's producing and for his well deserved advancement within DA!!!

Alan - ignore the snipers and keep doing what you are doing!!

You can pad out the image until it meets the mininum 2:1 aspect ratio requirement so it may be loaded into any category.

If it is 1000 x 331 then add a boarder 85 pixels wide to the top and bottom of the image. That will make the file size 1000 x (331+85+85) = 1000 x 501 and it will upload into any category.

For a better presentation choose the same background color for display as you did for the boarder and it should pretty seamlessly merge together to display your image at the higher aspect ratio.

The photo I'm trying to submit is horizontal that measures 1000 X 331. Also I 've read here the categories should not hold a lot of weight when a person is trying to get their photos judged on quality. For example I see a lot of photos in abstract that are not abstract at all they are just buildings. So when I see this I look at the photo for it's quality. So I believe it would be much better to put your photos where they will fit size wise or in the closest appropriate category.

Not sure he did this, nor am I sure this is what Alan Bob is talking about. But, vertical panoramas do cause display problems for many viewers/voters[/color].

Since everyone is in a up roar over me submitting a bird photo in Panorama I archived the Cardinal one. I have another one that I tried to submitt into a different category, keep in mind that if I made it different it would have too much dead space around because I've received that comment from other members before. So I just tried to upload this different photo in a different category and received this message. It does fit into Panorama category. So where do I put this photo for fair judging?

The image you attempted to upload does not appear to fall within the allowed proportions. The wider of either width or height cannot exceed twice the narrower. Example: If image width is 200 then image height must be less than or equal to 400, or vice versa. You may pad your image to fit the allowed proportions.

So now what?

The Panorama formate refers to the the crop. DA accepts 2:1. Another site's requirements are 2.5:1. This is regardless of whether it is by crop of one image or by stitching of 2 or more. Two Points:

If an image is not the DA requirement of 2:1 consider entering it in another category. Now then...there are panoramas being done in three sixty that come out square or less than 2:1 via software available so the definition may need to be be changed.

AND.

For pity's sake upload a larger size image of a panorama as the format does not allow a proper view in the vote size.

My understanding of the panorama category is that it should be an exceptionally wide field of view.

I also found this definition to further clarify:

A panoramic photograph is really defined by whether the image gives the viewer the appearance of a "panorama," regardless of any arbitrary technical definition.

I mean come on... DA has several categories, ... more than enough to present your work, without having to slip a macro or bird into the pano category. ;) Of course this is just my own opinion.

There was a thread about this - can't find it.

WE suggested then too that at least a 2:1 Ratio would be an appropriate size for entries into the Panorama Category. There have been many Award winners of this category based on the 2:1 Ratio and it seems to be generally acceptable.

Strictly speaking these entries are probably more Panoramic than Panorama. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoramic_photography

Yes my Leaf and Alan J's Bird aren't what you would call standard Panoramas but I think that it's fantastic that they have been recognised with an Award. Being different ought to be nurtured and not condemned!

At the end of the day the voter decides the fate of such images and that ought to be respected.

Edited to add: More of a worry to me are the almost square Panorama entries I've seen.

I always considered it anything beyond the 2:1 aspect ratio. It has been unimportant to me if it was constructed from 1 capture or 100.

I did have a digital camera that took panos but there was no stitching needed..so I don't think that should exactly be eliminated???? but definitely defined.

but I did see some lately that didnt quite look like panos too :)

I always thought it was a stitch picture or one taken like Andy Hornby does.
