In all honesty, I felt it was a beautiful capture, and a lovely seascape! But that's just 'my' opinion :)

Sherry - you're one of the secret Gems of DA and that go a whole way to helping it be extra special to a great number of people!!! I'd go as far as to say you are a model member and the type of person many of us have to aspire to!!

I believe that you're one of the most honest and consistant voters on the site - you never complain about scores recieved and you consistantly upload quality images that many of us greatly appreciate! You're a credit to yourself Sherry!!!

I remember seeing you praising the standard award winners on several occasions on the forum - it was the first I'd seen such a thing since I joined and it was heartwarming! I've only seen a few others since (Tonka - another Model member!) - I reckon I could only name ten or less members of DA that invigorate a person enough to try and become part of DA - you're very much one of them!!

(For the sceptical - no she doesn't score all my images high - far from it! :P But they are very much honest and I believe on the whole an accurate reflection of an image - if Sherry scores your image with a 6.... then it probably is a 6!!

If she scores it higher then you can bet that others will too because she really does recognise the difference between a good and not-so-good image! She's totally balanced and consistant and none of us could wish for a more accurate reflection on our images!)

Wonderful thoughts everyone!! I actually agree with most of them! :D

I too, have seen some pretty wild background/text colors, but didn't score down the image because of it. Although I understand the presentation aspect, the bg/text colors don't make or break the image, for me. :)

I was just curious how everyone else dealt with the colors and colours :D

Last week Joanna(kiwi) messaged me to let me know that one of my image's background was very bright, and actually it did ruined the presentation of that image over all. I checked that out and found it to be true, so I immediately changed it, but she didn't voted low on that one. It was really nice of her to do that.

Well I don't think a bkrnd/font should make or break an image but it is part of the whole presentation.

Surely a well know photographer would not choose terrible colors as part of a display for the works they would hang in a gallery..and surely if the photog chose gross colors, the gallery owner or some one else would surely say "Ummm nope don't do it"..right? lol.

Just as with photoshopping, nothing is going to matter if the image is not quality to begin with and that is what I try and judge by..

I have not seen a terrible dispay as of yet but I have seen an image which I felt would be better suited by an alternate color scheme,,did not take off for it but did leave that comment.

I am sure it is possible to have a scheme that might warrant a deduction though..jmo

When leaving a score that may be less I always leave a comment to say why!

In regards to backgrounds and font colours...I have done it twice! (maybe this thread has been started twice because of it! :P)

You have to look at the other side of the coin. If the colours compliment the image, then by jings, it could even make the score go up. If you have an image where it stands out more because of the surroundings then hats off to you! Great choice! Well presented!!!!

It is a WHOLE PACKAGE deal in my opinion. If you take a great image and then make a poor choice in presentation then it should affect your score. If you are good enough at photography to balance the shot, include interesting colours, etc...then you should have the eye to present it in its best light.

It is a contest. Should not all aspects of the image presentation be evaluated?

If you choose to overlook a distraction (bad b/g choice or unnecessary boarders as examples) when presented with a voting image, are you being fair to the next image you vote on if it is displayed without the same distractions? WE

Background.... is somewhat down my list, font is a lot further down again.

If someone get's either wrong.....in my opinion............I'll let them know via comments.

Certainly not!! - saying anyone is wrong for how they do things and score images - just kinda urge people not to be anal and to ....actively look for the more creative and artistic areas of images in your voting window.

If we all posted "standard" images then how boring would that be? And, indeed how un-inspiring would it be to vote upon so many "same-ish" images? Especially, if we all had the same backgrounds and fonts.

Just saying, unless ""us:w00t:" progressive/ambitious" photographers look at ways to differentiate ourselves - and indeed to appreciate other photographers differentation .........then we'd be as well rating/scoring "snaps" all our lifes and never learning anything from our peers. Ultimately, nothing gained and no progress!

Sorry, but I just don't understand the benefit in "just" scoring an image down because of the background/font! For goodness sake - say to the photographer that the background/font doesn't do the image any favours!

But to rubbish the "image" and indeed the thought and effort that's went into producing it kinda tuggs big style on my heart strings - purely because they've not chosen an appropriate background/font. Help them ...rather than shoot the silver bullet through their heart and totally demoralise them.

At very least leave full, detailed comments along with your lower score - no doubt...irrelative of the image owner's experience they'd appreciate the feedback.

Someone with a DA weight of 10 or less could have 40+ years professional photography experience - they may be catching up on the digital/internet aspects.

I really do understand Happysnaps point - of course I do and the next statement isn't a reflection upon her at all!

I just kinda like the thought that it's possible to help and to give as many pointers/direction/tips as possible. Not nearly enough of that sort of thing goes on here at DA.

Then again if I was a Rangers Football player - I'd certainly not teach a Celtic Football player how to score goals or how to become as good as a Ranger's player. I really feel that the philosiphy is all wrong for a learning environment - who at the top of the weights is really going to teach ....or be a guru to an understudy who may ultimately topple them?

And indeed, if we're going the way of rolling weights then there's every chance that the very same "up and coming member" will indeed be more of a supposed guru themselves than the member teaching them within 12 months.

Anyway.......heaven knows how I managed to get off on another rant! :blush:

I hate rambling too - I don't even know why I do it! LOL :hehe:

(The background colour/font thing has only happened to me once so far and I totally respect the feedback I received at the time - without it the score would have been meaningless to me.... so hats off for feedback under such circumstances!!)

In addition to the quality of the image itself.... title, description, background color, text color, 640 pixel size, full size.... and all other characteristics of an image will affect the reaction by a voter to an image. And, this reaction will vary amongst a spectrum of viewers/voters. This is a major feedback tool. You can use the reactions to your choices for image presentation to hone your skills. It is the unspoken great benefit from participation at DA.

Personally, I hate borders on images... because it reduces the viewable pixels of any image.

I think the choice of a complementary background and contrasting text color is really important.

This is a training ground. It will make you better and stronger.... that which does not kill you[/color]!

Consciously or not, I imagine poor choices for background colors or unattractive b/g & text combinations would have a negative influence on an image's rating.

First impressions are hard to overcome and the b/g color is a major part of the screen when a new image enters your voting window.

I am sure that complementary back ground colors also positively influence an image's overall rating.

It is all about the total image presentation on you voting screen.

Watch the DAILY WINNERS over the next couple of weeks. That might give you some idea as to how accepting voters are with "over the top" b/g colors (same goes for boarders too - you don't see many of those scoring on the home page either). WE

I find that if the text surrounding the image detracts from the image itself I will take off a point. It is a whole presentation. The image is the top priority and if something detracts from it, then it is not as well presented as it could be. It is like matting the image and then framing it and the matt overpowering the picture itself.

I score lower if the background is the same color as the edges of the image... causing me to not know when the image ends. It is hard for me to judge the composition of an image when it is like this.

As far as some of the outlandish colors I have seen as backgrounds... I really can not say if that has affected my vote or not. I try NOT to count off for what I consider a bad choice, but one must also keep in mind that that background is part of the presentation of the image... AND that background may overpower or bring out something in the image that doesn't do the image justice. That is why I honestly cannot say, I have to vote on what I see. One image can look completely different with two different backgrounds.

Does it appear that I am rambling? I kind of feel like I am rambling... I kind of think I am... :)
