I find the whole "weight" think quite difficult to get my head round
.

Perhaps "weight" is not the best term to consider when thinking of the weighted voting system.

.

Instead, think of weight in terms of votes.

.

A signature member with the weight of 100 rates an image SEVEN. They have just cast 100 signature votes of SEVEN for you image. The standard rating is capped (today at 13) so they also have just voted 13 standard votes of SEVEN for your image.

.

Another signature member with the weight of 500 rates the same image an EIGHT. You have another 500 votes of EIGHT in the signature rating total and 13 capped votes of EIGHT in the standard rating.

.

Finally, a non-signature member with the weight of 5 rates you image a 6. This vote carries no standing in the signature voting as this voter has yet to achieve the signature (top 7.5%) level. You would only receive 5 votes of six from this member in the standard competition.

.

Now, your image will be rated with 600 signature votes for an average of 7.833 [ (500 x 8)+(100 x 7) / 600 ] (your image will have 2 raw signature votes)

.

Your image will also carry a standard rating of 7.2581 [ (13 x 8) + (13 x 7) + (5 x 6) / 31 ] (your image will have 3 raw standard votes)

.

As you can see, all signature voters exert the same influence through their capped vote on the standard ratings while their full weight is leveraged in the Signature Rating Competition. Is there no 1 - 12?
The "capped" votes from signature members will be capped on different weights, I think the system decides. So if you get a no, it means that member's vote was not capped at say 13 on that specific date because the member's weight is less than the capped weight.

Capped weights is only on the raw, non signature votes, in order to have a better balance, in other words, where a signature member with a vote of say 200, votes on an image, you get the non-signature vote capped to a specific weight, but on the signature score the real weight will be taken into account with calculation of the score. Remember, the higher the voters weight, the more influence the vote has on the image's score.

I hope for now it makes a little sense.

EDITED to fix typos, and to say hey, Richard and WE, we've been posting replies at exactly the same time.:P Hope we don't get three completely different versions. Of the truth......

RE: Category to Signature
sarah (12/11/2007)
I have had a close look at all my votes received and they are either "No" or between 13 and 16. Is there no 1 - 12?
Certainly the column showing the voter's weight should vary between 1 and 660+.

The column showing the capped weight, which is about 13 today and could vary a few points either way, tells you the number of weight points applied from that voter's score for purpose of standard awards.

Everyone's votes count toward standard awards, but weights are capped.

Only signature votes count towards signature awards. No cap.

RE: Category to Signature

Just in case you're wondering - signature AWARDS can be won by anyone - you do not have to be a signature member to win awards in that category.

RE: Category to Signature

I have had a close look at all my votes received and they are either "No" or between 13 and 16. If the vote is capped at "14" for example, then that voter was a signature voter at the moment of voting. An uncapped vote indicates the vote was cast by a regular member. From that info, you can infer your own signature/regular status.

The number of total members ebbs and flows. The 7.5% is not set in stone. It has been higher at points in the past. There are times when inactive accounts are purged. The line moves fairly often. A signature member today may fall back to regular member tomorrow. So, it's a bit mysterious, by design.

RE: Category to Signature

Thanks Jacky.... next question though!! how do you know who are the top 7.5%?

RE: Category to Signature

Jacky is absolutely correct, Sarah.

RE: Category to Signature

Hi Sarah

Yes, you have to win at least three Pulitzer Awards, take part in at least 6 coverages of war/news items and be recognized by at least 12 countries as a world class photographer.

That the short version - the true version ::P

As you win awards, you gain weight, I'm not sure what the weight is, I think the top 7,5% of the site is the signature members. I'm sure someone will correct me here very soon....

Category to Signature

Please could someone tell me what you have to do to become a signature member? Does it happen automatically at some point? I have looked through the rules/abolut/faq etc. but can't seem to see anything about it.
