Remember its a request only, just keep in mind that the other person is requesting your view on that photograph, its not compulsory to reply, its up to you to decide......

I don't "know" Larus, but I "know of" Larus from DPC. Just to put things in context, DA is a different ball game from DPC. I've only voted about 25,000 times at DPC, so I don't have a long history of exposure there, but from what I've voted on over there..... the range is truly deserving of scores from 1 to 10. That is there and it is not necessarily relevant to here.... but it may be the context Larus knows.

At DailyAwards, the caliber of images seems to represent the upper half of the spectrum, as compared to all entries at DPC. But, that's just my opinion and I'm biased towards DA.

My vote doesn't matter too much any more, but I do vote the same criteria and scale at both sites. My average vote at DPC is 5.09. My average vote at DA was about 6.3 over 40,000+ votes. (Currently a little higher due to re-start.[/color])

There are more than a couple of schools of though on the comment request system. It is often advocated as a learning tool and I believe some members do use (and overuse) it as such.

I believe it has also been used by members as an attempt to seek the identity of voters, as well as to seek justification of a lower than expected vote and also to "[i]send a message[/i]" when someone feels that a voter needs to raise their scores. It has unfortunately even been used as a way to simply harass other members.

Attempts have been made to get beyond the "vote justification" assumption behind the comment request function but I feel for the most part they have been unsuccessful. Your initial point that asserts that you feel that you should not need to justify your votes (which I strongly agree) only supports the impression that comment request are often viewed as an attempt to gain vote justification for the submitting photographer.

There are multiple threads and post throughout the forum about comment request and no doubt this thread will add more.

A couple of other points.

First, comment requests are a subscriber only feature. Only about 10% of the Daily Awards participants can view or request comments on individual votes. So while they occur with some regularity, they come from a small percentage of the site population.

Second, I do not have any exact figures, but I would imagine a relatively small percentage of entries are effected by the auto-delete feature for those images with ratings below 5.0 I would guess the number is less than 5%. You certainly are not seeing only the upper half of the contest entries while voting and you are just as likely to view and vote on an a image destined for auto-deletion as the next person.

In the end, vote images the ratings YOU feel they deserve. If you receive comment requests treat them as you wish. Answer them all, answer some and ignore some, or ignore them all. You should not feel obligated to respond, but it is always nice if you can help people when you can.

I did notice you listed your voting average. If you would like another benchmark - my average rating for votes cast is 6.0819 after about 33,300 votes.

I will stick my two cents in.

When I have an image that is rating six or above and I get a stray five here and there...I will generally ask for a comment to see what that viewer saw...to get their point of view. It is used to help me out and learn from.

So...when I receive requests I always answer them and would appreciate others doing the same for me if they find time and wish to help a girl out! :D

Not really following you here... You saying I am voting too low cause the standard here is so high or you saying I should raise my standard and vote lower since the quality is so high?

Anyway, that was not the point or question I made, I was simply curious if this is the "norm" here, that people question and demand explanations for votes?

[color="indigo"]If you're voting on the pool of images, like you vote on the entire pool at DPC, then you will vote in an offensive (below merit) manner. The bottom portion of the pool has been auto-deleted here.... at DPC, you are presented with "all".

It's okay to vote any voting scale you wish. Just want to say that the lowest quality images are already gone. It's possible some images will appear in your voting window, as the selection is random from the entire pool. And, you're likely to get a few newly entered, low quality images. But, in general, you'll see the top half of the total spectrum when voting. So, it's usually fair and objective to vote with this in mind. Specifically, I hold my below "6" votes for images with fatal technical errors.

But, as I said earlier, your voting scale, whatever it is, is fine with me. Just wanted you to know that there has been a sorting of the qualtiy appearing in the voting window prior to your viewing.

Just to be clear.... I vote 1 to 10 here. But, I am willing to explain to anyone why I voted that way on their image.

On DPC, I get a lot of low votes on my very best images.... and I never get a chance to ask "why?". So, dailyawards.com allows a better exchange of information.... via peer review[/color].

Larus, I am all with Tonka on this one. I ask a lot, but I also answer all of the request that I receive as I have time.

Hello there!!

From my perspective, I hold the comment request feature as a learning tool..I personally believe that everyone's opinion is of value..If I receive a low vote or a lower vote than average or even a high vote..I would like to know why..It is not a negative request when I make them..Just simply "What could I have done better or what were the faults in this image". and "What did I do right?!:w00t::D"..Constructive critism is the fastest way for me to learn how to improve my photography..

I know many feel the same way...

I will say that this feature should be treated with respect and also that you are not required to reply..:)

We as humans are all unique as well and sometimes without meaning it, we might word our request in a way which might seem "off"...

Though some requests may not be made in the best manner,,hopefully this is not the norm ...I have not had any issues with receiving requests in the year that I have been a member here...

Again, you are not obligated to reply and you can certainly choose whom you wish to reply to or not :D..
