Macro (Help with bugs )

I have recently started to take bug , macro shots can anyone please tell me what I should be aiming for ? Should the eyes of the bug be in good focus ? what can I do in post editing to improve my images ? what is the norm in post , crop , contrast , sharpen ,or should I be doing more to inhance my images . I am aiming for the best out of the camera shots , with only basic post work , is this what most of you do ?

Has anyone ever encountered a voter weight 6 vote 6 on 35 images in 2 hrs. and yet followed by someone weight of 2 votes 5. Some of these images are up for annual vote and no one with weight over 200 has voted on them in 3 weeks . Where does reporting have any affect when the number 2 voter cast 600 votes out of 1000 as 5's . One of the images is in the top 10 on the whole site in wedding category. When they time after time miss the mark why should they ever have a say in signature anything . In 2003 I received the top 2 PPA awards in Vegas for my High School Senior campaign . Literally sitting next to Jay Maisel , Hanson Fong , Monte Zucker , Clay Blackmore , Calvin Hayes . Susan and Steve Powers , Connie and David Ziser , Helen Yancy , Skip Cohen and on and on . First person on stage for the night of of 150 or so merit recipients . I can compete there , but not here ?
My time will be limited in this community that has an unrealistic assumption that most possess the skill,taste and unbiased opinion needed to vote and for the others that cheat no integrity or respect for all involved . Best Wishes to those that have been kind and receptive to me here . For the powers that be when is the response to these reported voters ever going to come ?

Images use to be 640 at the largest size.Can they now be 2000?This is what I get for being out of action for awhile.I read Eric's post image function.Does it do this automatically or do I have to do it? :doze:

How many of you check the "wrong category" box when voting?

I'm getting tired of seeing squirrels, flowers and other subjects in the "Other" category. My attitude is, "They have their own, use them."

Correct Way to Vote

I'm fairly new to DA and would like some insight on the correct way to vote.

A good portrait to me is when I sense a moment of tension, humor, a subtle knowing flutter when I connect with the eyes of the subject. It must somehow also have a secret that you want to take part in or that makes you wonder. If the image has these traits i'll vote 8 - 10.

What strikes me, in all categories, is the feel I have for the subject and not how the photographer "shot" it. If a photo doesn't strike an interest i'll vote it between 5 - 6.

Let me add that I do take into consideration originality, contrast, depth of field, composition and sharpness on all images.

I was told by one of the DAGC members that voting on interest for an image was wrong and doing that will get me reported to Admin. Then Mr. Hall replied to my comment for his RFC and said I have a lack of judgement. So if someone could enlighten me on the correct way to vote I'd appreciate it and take it into consideration the next time I decide to vote. Hopefully this will stop all the negative comments I get when I answer a RFC.

OK I have an image up named Crystal Clear. I like it, think the reflections and the colors are good and everyone that has seen it seems to agree because I get 6-10 on this with an average of 7.3+. I recently got a 5 from a person named ********. I said "this is the lowest vote I received on this image, do you have suggestions to make it better?" This is the reply I received:

if you are telling me what have you done differently of would done anybody with a camera in hand (and gere i could include my son wich is 3 years old).....So where is your contribution as photographer ? What makes you think your picture would be different form other 100 people wich could be there in that moment and place near tou you thaking a picture of that building ? I am telling you : nothing . this is the reason i gave you souch a low vote . And one more thing : you should not wote the other people pictures with a bad note just becouse thei did this at your picture . it is not fair . Thia is telling a lot about you as a person ...

Now it sounds to me as if she is saying that my photography is no better than her 3 year old and then goes on to further insult me saying that I "revenge vote" Now I rarely vote at all, 1st I dont like the drama that seems to ensue when you vote honestly and the person doesnt like what you have to say and second I have my own business and dont really have time, which is why I only upload about once a week. Can someone translate this? Am I reading this wrong? I know my dang red hair sometimes comes with a temper and just want to make sure Im reading this right before I send Eric an email. I didnt think my question provoked such a response. Thanks so much!

The same photos come up over and over when I am voting

some of the photos I never see. Some I see over and over. These won't let me vote again of course.I wonder why? I vote about every day or other at least 100 times.

And there's this one guy (or woman, I don't know which) that the machine won't let me vote for at all, and I don't even know who they are. Is it because I gave him or her 10's a couple of times? Does the machine radar go off and think that we're in collusion?The photos were just really that good. I wonder why I can't vote on this person's photos.:)

Standard vote or signature vote?

One of my images had signature rating of 7.0 and standard rating of 7.3 and round about yesterday night after receiving 3 and 1 votes respectively. Now after few minutes member weighted in his/her 300s rated it a 7, so the signature rating remained the same but the standard rating went down to 7.2 and round about, after a few minutes another member in his/her 300s voted 7 and again the standart rating went down to 7.17 while the signature rating remained unchanged. Is this normal? I mean I was under the impression that when a signature member votes on your image signature rating of that image changes. Isn't that so?

What's going on in Challenges???

While voting on the new challenges, twice I was told that my vote 'was out of range' and it would not accept it. Both times I had voted '7'. Neither image was a '6' nor were they an '8'....IMO

What's up with this???

Now I can't deleat myself, and I really feel like an idiot with myself appearing over and over in the question about adding my thumbnail. It's really embarrassing. I tried to deleat it all but couldn't. Can someone please take me away in the section when I ask about thumbnails then appear over and over like a dolt? Don't worry, I'll come back. It won't take me long to run into another wall when I will then need additional pointers. As for the flag, who knows what kind of a waving botch up I'd make with that, so I'll leave that alone for now and just focus on my photos. Thanks for all your help.:D!:hehe

Account weight

Today I noticed that my current account weight and my lifetime account weight are different numbers. I won a sig category award last night so I "gained" 2 "lbs" but it is only showing on my lifetime account weight. I've only been a member for a month so I know my weight is not expiring. It's not a big deal just wondering why.. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

How do I make my little thumbnail self accompany my comments on the forum ?

Membership maximum image size

OK, I know when you get membership your maximum size can be 2000 pixles by 2000 pixles. But when I submit a web jpeg at this size, it says it's too big and can only be 2000kb or something like that. My images that are 2000 x 2000 end up being at least one megabyte. Is it because I'm still using 16 bits? I've ended up having to go back to the original size I had before I was a member. So how do I submit a bigger image? Thanks so much, Jan Kirstein:)

I recently responded to a request and recived a notice from the photographer that they did not understand what I ment in my reply . How do I reply to that ? I did a members check but the excat name does not show up . The image was of a dog with flash in the pupils , I had simply put the eyes should be fixed , thinking they would know in animals green -grey eye is the same as red eye in people and should be black .

Hi everyone. I am new to this site but so far I am really liking it :) It seems like a great place to learn and improve. I was curious how the numbers in the voting system line up to some of your personal judgements of "poor, okay, good, very good, excellent and outstanding." Even though it is a 1-10 system, my experience with number systems like this has shown that everyone has a little bit different idea of what numbers coorespond with what judgement. I was just wondering what some of your personal break-downs are or what some of you think the average breakdowns are for the majority of members. I was just curious because I would like to better know how to interpret the numbers assigned to my image and also make sure I am not voting other's images too low or high (I would like to know what I am saying with the number I assign). I know this has been discussed before.......in an attempt to eliminate target voting. But what's to be done when a photo takes forever to load? What is a reasonable time to wait?

Most images come on instantly, but recently I've had images that take, honestly, minutes, and some that won't come up at all.

What causes this delay?

I've just had back to back photos that simply would not 'show up'!

OK, I've vented.................but what's the solution?

Panoramic images

Hey guys, I have been trying my hand at panoramic images lately. I have successfully created and uploaded few of them here already, but I am not sure about the ideal size of the image....:ermm: I mean I use autostich to stich the images ( usually 4 or more) and then I use photoshop elements 6 to crop it and to lighten or darken the image and to enhance colours. But the size I get is somewhere in the region of 1400 X 750. Is this a good size? Can I resize this image to 2000X ? No idea....

Shooting Towards Stage

I will be in the dark about 50ft away from the stage. I don't think flash is something tolerated or do I even need it to capture good shots.

Image not getting votes

I've only been here about 2 weeks. Still getting the feel for everything. I've noticed something strange. It seems that sometimes when I have a photo that is ranking # 1 in a category and only needs one or two more votes to qualify for an award it just stopes getting hit. It will just sit there for days with 14 sig votes. and won't get hit anymore. All the images that I loaded after it are still getting hit several times a day and have accumulated close to 30 sig votes by now. I thought it must just be a coincidence, but it has happened several times now. Has this happened to anyone else?

I hope this doesn't sound too dumb but how am I getting views on photos that are NOT archived yet and also have NOT won any awards yet. It happens to most of my photos but not all.

I'm sure there is a perfectly logical explanation for it, I just don't know it.

Low Voting

I know this topic is not at all new.. Any pointers on what to do when someone (the same person each time) is voting low on all of your images and only responds to rfc with "no suggestions for improvement" or "it's a nice photo, no suggestions for improvement" if they respond at all. Does this not seem like they are just clicking 6 without really looking at the photo or purposely trying to vote low to lower the score? I'm not talking about images that are recieving multiple 6's or averaging 6.something, I'm talking about images that have mostly 7's 8's and 9's. I's appreciate any feedback.
