I Just Want To Cry!!

There are two things that are making me weepy. (1) A continued influx of photos that have noise and OOF issues, most all probably due to submitting shots larger than 640X on the long side. (2) And high scores given to these submissions. I know, I know, we talked about this before, but maybe you don't know how bad it is, or how much it skews the contest, and hurts the photographer.

For instance. There is one member, on whose photos I vote pretty frequently, who nearly always has the problems mentioned above. In fact, some time ago, I sent her a private message explaining the scores she was receiving from me, and referred her to several threads, and the article written by Richard.

Just minutes ago, I unknowingly scored a photo of hers a 5, due to the reasons mentioned above. After I voted, I saw that everyone else was giving her a score of 7.3+. This has happened numerous times with this photographer. She is skilled. She has a substantial weight. She has some nice photos. The other voters, though, are giving her an inflated score. What must she think of me, receiving significant "dings" due to the same old issues?

The major problems are not with me or her. In my opinion, there are two things that are really at fault here. (1) A failure of the Administration to continually inform and educate each and every member about the sizing of their photos, and (2) the failure of the many (?) of our members to take a careful, but fair, look at every photo. At full size. I'm going out on a limb here, and I'm taking a saw with me. Laziness, speed-voting, a lack of honest discernment, and inflated scores, all do injury to the photographer, and a disservice to our community in general.

It's enough to make a grown man cry.

I am not normally one to give up on something, but this is about all I can take. I don't know what is expected for a photographer for this site. I've been a member over a year and my stats read like this: Votes Cast 6501, Votes received 1603, Awards won 0, Lifetime weight 2.

I'm getting very tired of having my hope raised and then being slammed. Every time I have a picture that is doing well, receiving "unique picture" "great composition" "cool" and other such comments and a standing of 7.5+, within two days I'm getting comments like "lacking interest" or "poor composition" and such, and the standing drops to 6.3-. I don't know what is expected of me as no one offers suggestions to improve or change the picture to a winner.

I try to stay active. I enter nearly every challenge and have even placed on some of them, yet the pictures posted in the competition (sometime the same as the challenge photos) get low votes. I've gotten to the point that I don't even like entering this site anymore. I all but stopped voting because of lack of interest in this site. I've reached the point that when the three photos still in the competition are archived, I will likely not enter another. I'm no professional and I don't have and cannot afford a $3,000 camera with a $1,500 lens, so I know I'm not going to get the same quality pictures as many others, but DAM, give me a break. My work isn't that bad!

I am having trouble with voting, waiting, but the pic I just voted on comes back time after time.

I know about the wait time rule, so when this happens, I purposely wait at least 30 seconds between votes. Time to give it a good look. And the same picture popped back up again and again.

What I have found is if I am trying to vote less than a 5, the picture comes back until I vote 5 or greater. It's not a fluke, it's very consistent. This is very annoying and I see no sense to it. 4, 3, 2, and 1 are there but I can't use them because??? When a picture offends me (nudity without art or photo quality) , the only way I have of stopping it is to vote low. Maybe the offenders will get tired of low scores and leave.

I get really annoyed when people submit snapshots of their kids that have no redemming value, poor photography, no interest, etc. I want to vote 4 and can't, over and over again. As soon as I vote 5 the picture goes away and a new one appears. Try it. I bet you'll see voting 5 or above works. if you keep getting the picture back multiple times

Now, in the Challenges, I CAN vote any number, thankfully, because some of those pictures are horrible, and not even on subject. I am finding some becoming offensive. And doesn't anyone screen these pics before turning a Challenge over for voting?

Lack of interest

It happens people don't feel attracted to an image, to the subject although it might be a very good photo: e.g. you get an average of 8.0. Regularly, I see people voting quite low in this case, bringing down the average of the score. I would propose to, in case of 'lack of interest', not to force people to give a vote.
What do you think about this proposal?

Is anyone else having images that are taking long to download {when voting}? Lately some images are forever. I have actually just stopped voting for a while. I have a new computer with a 640 processor, so I know its not my computer. And I not being impatient, at least I don't think so.....Sandy

Size Issues Persist

1. Some images in the contest are relatively small. They are at a disadvantage when compared to images sized to 640 pixels on the longest dimension, proportions constrained. Small images are not prohibited, but they really are so small, it's difficult to discern and inspect details. Definitely not in the best interests of the participant to upload a thumbnail sized image. [/color][color="firebrick"]It's possible this contest site should have a minimum dimension for the short side of an image, proportions constrained. 426 pixels would be the minimum dimension I would suggest.[/color]

[color="navy"]2. Some images are huge, when viewed at full size. Rarely, does a very large full size image help the score of a voting window version. It's because some people are showing a 100% pixel view. That is going to reveal all the flaws and fuzziness in the image. Or, some people are sizing up their images beyond the pixels available, forcing their post-processing application to interpolate pixels. That will degrade an image's quality every time. The 2000 pixel allowance for members was intended to facilitate panorama images. That's a great use of the full size feature. But, if a member has a square or a standard rectangle (3:2 or 4:5) and upsizes to 2000 pixels on the longest dimension, it will not be to the advantage of the image's score. [/color][color="firebrick"]It's possible this contest site should have a maximum dimension for the long side of an image, proportions constrained. 1080 pixels would be the maximum dimension I would suggest. [/color]

I was commenting on photos and had not yet scored them when I inadvertently hit the return button and before I knew it.....I was on the next image and a message saying that my score of "1" was outwith the range. :w00t:

I'm really sorry about this - I had absolutely no intention of voting a 1 on either image but fortunately my score will not be counted!

I'm very sorry about these scores and they in no way reflected my feelings about the images as hopefully you'll be able to tell by my comments.

I do have three pics of the same specioes of bug on DA..... But shot at different times of day... different aperature... different shutter speed,,, different post processing..... THEY are DIFFERENT CAPTURES......

I agree that double dipping is not good for DA,,,,,

But images of similar subjects.... whether they be mountains.... mammals.... bugs.... birds.... herens.... parrots... tulips.... basketball/soccer players....

I almost never look at the list of top voters, but I was cruising, and I made an astonishing discovery. A new member has voted 1,136 votes (as of this time) in the last 24 hours. She appears to have no photos entered. This can't be good for her or for the site. In my opinion, there should be a limit to how often you can vote in 24 hours, or maybe even a week, especially if you aren't submitting pics. Perhaps this calls for a change of policy or site design. What do you think, my friends?

Peer Pressure = Peer Review

Daily awards is set up as a peer review site which I really enjoy because not only do I get feed back from people who are helpful and knowledgeable, I also get feedback from those that disagree with my viewpoint. It could be wrong category, lighting, cropping etc. If it is done in the right way, peer review can improve the ability of everyone around them. Sometimes it takes a while to learn how to put negative thoughts into constructive criticism. Sometimes it doesn't matter how nice you put something people are going to take offense.

I am not totally sure what the wrong category button does except to frustrate people, but it helps let me know there is a better primary category for my photo. Suggestions help also :D

Peer review also helps maintain the quality and level of competition on this site. A person usually gets frustrated if something is pointed out to them once, but they will probably shake it off and go on. If it happens over and over they will take notice and either ask for advice or feel abused and take offense. No-one likes to be abused but what else is peer review if it isn't pressure from the community saying this is wrong it needs to be fixed? It is what makes Daily Awards a better community.

Are there sites out there that will let you exclude a person from voting on an image or leaving a comment if the person doesn't want your vote or doesn't like your comment? Maybe but then it would not be a peer review site, it would a very hard place to get an objective opinion from because all the negative feedback would be blocked.

It is hard to learn to accept, and sometimes it is hard to respond kindly but getting both positive and negative feedback is what makes this the place to be. It helps us learn and know what our audience and sometimes future customers want.

What does the wrong category button do? does it just alert us that someone has a suggestion for better placement or do so many wrong category clicks archive the image?

"The Subject" as the only criterion

But, when I ask voters (mostly low weight, but some medium weight) for suggestions for improvement in an image, about 7 out of 10 say they have no suggestions for improvement, but they did not like the subject. That's not a fair and objective methodology. And, I'm quite certain these voters would not welcome reciprocity from me.

Not sure how we can get people past their myopic approach to judging photography. I'm hoping this forum post will have some influence. It is human nature to prefer some subjects over others. It is the responsibility of the photo contest voter to set aside their biases and prejudices and look at the photo. In related matters, there is far too little consideration of category, too little time taken to view full size images and too little weight placed on degree of difficulty[/color].

[color="indigo"]Footnote: The one exception to my post would be images which are objectionable or obscene. For those, we do have a report button in the voting window.[/color]

I could not access DA today...however, as is my persistent nature, I googled DA in hopes to find a working link...I found one under umm.I think it was Andrew Gunther's review of the Daily awards website..:D,,,,lol...I clicked on the link and WaaLaaa..

Now if the site is down for maintenance, I would have guessed that no links would have worked..but since this one did..I must assume this is a different issue today for lack of ability to access DA via my normal method?

Personal Voting Accountability

Within the past few months, some positive changes have been initiated with the intention of improving voting rates at Daily Awards. Still, everyone needs to take personal responsibility to insure that they are replacing the votes that they receive from the site.

Everyone has his or her own individual voting ratio listed on their account page. Get into the habit of making sure you maintain a positive ratio here. A positive ratio, one where a voter returns at least as many votes as they receive, is generally expected.

Summer and its associated activities can always lead to a downturn in voting. Still, I was surprised today when I checked the voting ratios of the Top 100 Members by Weight and discovered that 40% were not meeting their voting obligation by replacing the votes that they had received. 31% were replacing less than 85% of the votes they have been receiving.

The TOP 100 list includes many of the most active participants on the site. This group should be setting an example with their voting habits and not be pulling excess votes from the site.

The overall voting ratio for this 100-member group was a positive 1.279 to 1. That’s returning almost 28 extra votes for every 100 votes received. (Do not confuse your personal voting ratio with the listed site-voting ratio – Your personal voting ratio is based on your total votes cast vs. your total votes received. The site-voting ratio is based on the number of votes per active image on the site over the previous 24-hour period.)

Still, if the 40% from this group that are in voting deficit (those taking more votes out than they are returning) would just be at a 1:1 vote ratio, this TOP 100 groups overall performance would increase to 1.698:1 (a 33% improvement).

EVERYONE should take a moment and evaluate their personal voting performance. Are you returning the votes you are receiving? If yes, THEN THANK YOU VERY MUCH. If not, ask yourself what you can do to insure that you return to the site your fair share of the voting responsibility.

Meeting your voting requirement does not necessarily mean you have to simply vote more. Ratio’s can also be improved by more actively managing your contest entries.

Always REMEMBER, every single vote that someone cast is a vote another member receives. If you are receiving 150 votes per day, you will need to return those 150 votes in order to maintain a positive voting ratio and meet your voting responsibilities.

[color="navy"]Okay, no problem with the "WOW" part. I already know this guy does not like any of my subject material and notches his vote down when he sees my Colorado images. That's not the issue.

The issue is.... the image on my monitor is vibrant in color.... almost oversaturated..... definitely not "dull". The colors are one of the assets of that particular image. I suspect the gentleman does not see the same colors on his monitor. Whose problem is this? Well, it's mine... because I receive the vote and comment from this [url=http://www.dailyawards.com/top_voters.aspx][size="2"]very active voter[/size][/url]. And, there's nothing I can do about it when someone else's monitor is poorly calibrated. But, my reason for posting this thread is because I strongly suspect the gentleman is using a browser which is not color managed. He has another layer of difficulty, beyond a poorly calibrated monitor.

There is a webpage which can test your browser and monitor's compatibility with modern photography. The first image on the page linked below should show all quadrants the same[/color].

Missing Vote

I am just curious about a voting issue. One of my pictures...130982...says it has three votes. The vote is showing up on the top graph, but down where it says user weight and comments, etc., it is showing only two votes. Can this be fixed or can you tell me what is going on?

Okay...

Just wanted to find out if anyone else now is having any issues browsing?
I did have issues awhile back about having to click multiple times on links within DA...the issue never really was resolved...but as of later last night...man, I can't click on anything just once and go to the page..

sometimes i have to refresh , reclick, stop, refresh, click or click on this side or that side...
so I am wondering if this is a browser issue or a pc issue..
my son did say that one of his friends was having trouble since using ff3 and that there was an update to v3?

I went to mozilla but didn't see an update anywhere..

so I am not sure..
but I am going to try and clean everything..already did a virus/ad/mal/spy scan..

thanks for any info, confirmation or denial...:)

I was just typing some comments on an image prior to scoring it .......when I accidentlly hit the Return button.:w00t: (I've been doing a fair amount of typing today)

My intentions were to score the image with an 8 but after hitting the Return button a Default score of [b]"1"[/b] was allocated to the image.:w00t:

Fortunately, that score was kicked out by the system as it [i]"deviated more than the allowed tolerance and was discarded."

Is there another way of doing this?

Perhaps if you score a 5 or less then you always get asked [i]"Are you sure you wish to rate this image with a score of....."[/i]

Obviously, I'm embarrassed by this, especially as I don't think I've ever scored an image so low. Especially one that I basically liked!

Maybe this has happened to other members too?

(I've sent the image owner an apology and an explanation.)

This am when voting..approximately 50% of the images reappear after I have voted and are available for a second a vote it seems..when I selected a rating and hit vote the second time ..it does transition to the next image up..wondering if I am actually placing a second vote when I do this? This occured in mor than one category. I usually vote by category so that it's not a case of an image appearing say in abstract and the coming up in digital darkroom or some such as that. Thanks for any assistance or insight..I don't want it to seem as if I'm creating some strange voting pattern!

But, as I clicked on the leave private message, it said that the photo no longer exisited on the site ( or something close to that), my question is, that if it no longer is on the site, then why are we still voting on it? Images appearing twice in voting window

Okay so lately I have been thinking that I have seen images twice in the voting window. I know that some images look a like and that there are different versions (I, II, II, etc), but I know I have voted on some of these images before. Yesterday it happened. I remembered specifically voting and commenting on the image and then later when it won an award viewing it and seeing that the comment had been erased. So when it came up again yesterday I commented on it saying that I remembered voting and commenting on it. The owner of the image sent a private message saying that she remembered my comment and that yes she did delete it. So I then knew that I had in fact voted on it before since she remembered it too. Okay so that was the first time I knew that I had seen an image twice in the voting window. Then today I was voting, after I voted on one image I got an error message saying "your vote was not counted, you have already voted on this image" or something to that effect. So how is it that images are coming up twice?

DA Points purchased

Hi today I purchased 54000 DA points using google check out, and my credit card has been charged 54$ for the same, I just now checked out with the credit card company and they too said that the said amount has been debited from my account. This is surprising, just now I got an e-mail from nowhere@dailyawards.com, with the sub: Bhasmang, you have missed a lot at dailyawards.com, when I opened the message it was written that you had last logged on at 4/13/2008 12:44:34 p.m and since that ---- ----- ---- has happened, but the most surprising thing is that from 4/13/2008 there has hardly been a day when I hadn't logged on to dailyawards, so there seems to be a mistake here.:) Having said that its a good message to send to someone who hasn't logged on to DA recently. Has this happened to anyone else here???????????

[color="navy"]An image appeared in my voting window this morning. It was okay on first glance, but had an odd look to it. Upon viewing the full size version, JPG artifacts were pervasive throughout the image, but especially along the mountain ridge. It was very bad with unacceptable quality... a very low resolution image! I voted a "4" and left comments about the JPG artifacts. At the top of my voting window displaying the next image, the following message appeared:[/color]

[color="navy"]The image carried a signature average of 7.1461 and a standard average of 7.0696. Because my "4" vote was discarded, the image must have already collected more than 15 raw votes.

Either people are not looking at this image or they don't know what they are looking at. My message offering a constructive criticism may or may not have gone through. It's clear that my vote was not recorded. The problem is the author of the image may not be getting the feedback he needs to improve his technique on future images[/color].

Today, a change was implemented to cache image ranks in an effort to improve performance. Simply, this means the ranks that you see on the image viewer pages (3,432 / 32,334 - for example) will now be stored for 24 hours before being refreshed.

Please report any of the following observations here.

- Change in performance (better or worse)
- Issues with image rank

Is anyone having trouble getting the home page to load today, only 6 photo's coming up!

Dropping The "Quick Comments" Section

I'm borrowing this from the Debates thread. I think many of us would like to pull the plug on Quick Comments. Even though we might use it occasionally ourselves. Ultimately, it's just not that helpful, even when it is positive. What do you think?
