What Zeke said about the 18 - 200 being massive made me think even more about checking out how it feels. Having the store put on a few different lenses on the camera. I went shooting with someone who had a Nikon 40D (not sure about the x) and when I held it, it felt like a toy compared to the D300. I'm not knocking the camera; it is nice and light and my friend loves hers. They've each done their research and found it to be more effective in the lens. I believe the only one that has inbody stabilization is the Sony alpha.<br><br>From what I've heard, the Nikon kit lens is more than adequate for most. The Canon kit is pretty junky though. The 18-200 VR is a massive lens and is quite expensive (although awesome). The 55-200 VR is much cheaper, is a nice complement to the kit lens and will serve people well for a while if they don't mind changing lenses. I'm not positive if Canon's are in body but I seem to remember some of my classmates talking about that in Studio Photography class. All the students in that class had Canon's except for 2 of us with Nikon's. One thing I would do is (for the Nikon), compare the price for the body and the 18 - 200 VR bought separately and the total cost added up and the Nikon that comes with the 2 kit lenses. Then you can better determine if the VR, one less lens to have to switch and carry, and any other advantages you can think of is worth the added cost. Or maybe you prefer having the options of having 2 and decide if VR is worth it? Personally I can't say because I haven't given it a fair evaluation. Can't help you with Canon's but I know they have a stabilizer too but is called something else. Isn't the stabilizer in the camera instead of the lens with the Canon? One other suggestion that was recommended to me when I was buying my first DSLR. I was deciding between 2 comparable models of Canon and Nikon and doing what was advised gave me the final push. Even if your not buying it locally at a store, if you have a store that carries DSLR's, go check both out. See how they each feel in your hand and which one seems more logical and easy to operate the settings on.
