It depends on what your criterias are for an image to be thought of as too dark. Sometimes some people confuse low key with underexposure.

If you are familiar with histograms you will see the left side of the histogram graph hitting the edge when it is underexposed. It will mean that the darkest areas of the photo are so dark that they have no detail. With a low key image the graph will show many pixels in the shadows but they don't hit the edge. Even the blackest part of an image shows detail. Like if you were looking at a black leather couch you wouldn't want to loose all detail as is the case in under exposed images. You would want to see the texture in the leather which if seen would indicate a properly exposed image.

Linda

RE: Voting

I recall one photo I came across that was rated by me as "offensive, Wrong category and underexposed" I gave the artist a 4 score. This was my opinion and mine only, yet that person sent me a very nasty reply and ended it wit "I look forward to your first win.".

Who was wrong here? I don't even remember who it was and frankly I don't care. My opinion was given and was not graciously received. Point is, don't be afraid to say what you think.

RE: Voting

Do you all think it is appropriate to just say "I just don't like the look"?

There have been images with some tech. issues but I rated high because the overall impact was quite nice...As a rule I will consider first impression, tech issues and then aesthetic value in that order in my votes..

I am not sure yet with things like...comments I have seen on other images, "aperature is too low (or too high)" ...this is just an opinion right? it depends on what you wanted to capture correct?

and sometimes, I am confused with underexposure...is something I think that is too dark automatically an underexposed image?

just as an example of the things I question...

RE: Voting

[color="navy"]Wonderful, artistic images with technical flaws and aesthetic problems should not attract your top score.
