You know, there is a large subjective element at work in all photography. We might both read the same book (by Charles Dickens), and have completely different assessments, even though the book might be considered a "classic." I don't expect that to ever change at DA. Even though there are composition "rules," some are made to be broken. For my part, I think that my exposure to the wide range of styles here has been the greatest influence on my thinking and my photography.

RE: Critiqueing Magazine Photos

IMO, DA has some of the world's best photographers. I have had several images published in magazines and in fact have an image in this month's (April) issue of Shutterbug magazine in their "City at Night" competition. The exact same image is in competition here right now. The editors of Shutterbug liked the shot but the editors here...not so much. I'm not complaining, just commenting on the great quality of images here.

Critiqueing Magazine Photos

IMO, DA has some of the world's best photographers. Since my intro to digital photography, I've become more interested in the shots found in any magazine, and frankly, I believe that many of their photos would fail to make the grade at DA. I receive a number of magazines of different types, and I frequently ask myself, "How would this do at Daily Awards?" For instance, take a look at the April/o8 Popular Photography pages 24 (tarantula), 47, and 50. I just can't imagine these shots earning Daily, Monthly or Annual awards here. I'll stack my DA "heroes" up against some of the most reknowned photographers anywhere.
