I agree with you....i get so many and i vote the boring, uncomposed, unoriginal shots low and then the people yell at me and say i dont have any talent or anything... well macro shots are some of the easiest shots to fool people with......it is easy to take good ones (good to the average eye, that is) but macro shots of things at new and interesting angles, maybe an insect doing something out of the ordinary--those are the ones that deserve more than a 5 vote.

Oh my,,,I kinda agree...but

to not allow a nonphotographer the beautiful blessing of viewing such great works is a bummer..

my goodness some might be deeply affected by just one image here and it might very well change their life....ya know?

This is a tough call for me...I know ...always lookin at the up side and the underdog am I ....

I think that if a pattern is there on an empty folio of lets say...what can be conclusively assumed as a negative voting scale..low numbers or no variety then there should be some detection and the account looked at with consideration.

I guess...would be my thought.

I agree with Linda and Glynn on the point regarding voting with no images posted. Yes, we were all new to the site once and have to start somewhere and we all have different tastes and may admire different aspects of photography but someone who actually posts their work shows by doing so some seriousness and commitment to the subject. I feel that voting carries a certain amount of responsibility and at the moment anyone can sign up and "vote away".

This happens to be a site dedicated to people with a shared interest and most often deeply abiding passion for photography. We come to showcase our work and appreciate/evaluate the work of others. So when a member with no portfolio starts to vote erratically and illogically - alarm bells should start to ring. Personally I do not relish or indeed want any random members of the public voting on my images. For all I know they may not own so much as a point and shoot - and therefore their "opinions" carry no weight whatsoever. The inclusion of non-photographers in the voting process is like giving a poker virgin a hand in a big game. Pointless and dangerous.

Wow , that is a negative thought :(, didnt even occur to me....

I didnt mean that it was that exclusive..just that it seems there might just be an ill intent to vote irresponsibly "especially so " if someone did not have images up..just an implication not a fact, or highly probable or anything at all,,,just an observation.

My rolling weight observations are that it is totally possible for the highest weighted member to become the lowest weighted member all of a sudden. it can happen..just depends on the upload/win pattern of each member..albeit extremely technical, maybe not even probable .... but true.

That really will have no impact on low weighted votes. The only place that rolling weight will have any effect is with Signature ratings where newer members or lower weighted participants do not vote.

one can certainly be a voting/commenting jerk regardless of whether they post images in the contest or not. (maybe it is just that one can not retaliate against those with no images!!!) WE

The removal of, possibly a lot of, weight could certainly shift a lot of perspective here.

Though actual weight might be posted, it will not be counted. just a reminder...

Also I do not think it is that these votes are not welcome. there is quite a difference between getting a 3 as I did with the comment, another macro, big deal...and a 2 which I just received from another voter who's comment was "lacking interest" to a voter who gives me a 2 and says "there are many flaws here, oof, underexposed or technically inferior.

WE :D I think that those who are voting and leaving obviously degrading or ignorant remarks are in a separate class than those who participate and upload with integrity.

It does not bother me terribly when people react according to their feelings because I can obviously tell they have an issue and it isnt really my images so it is not a huge deal for me..Just trying to give a little validation to the situation.:cool:

I feel that everyone's votes should be welcome. You should not have to have photos posted in order to join or vote. In fact, I think it would be beneficial to encourage more non-photographers to participate. The more varied the public opinions the better.

Besides, the weight system accounts for any outlier votes cast by non entry accounts. Without images, the most weight any voter could achieve would be a 2. That 2 weighted vote would have NO impact on Signature ratings and minimal impact on standard ratings.

Even a 2 weighted vote cast at a THREE would only effect an image otherwise averaging in the 7's about 5/100's (.05) of a point at 15 votes. After 15 votes, this THREE vote would be unlikely to be counted at all based on the current low outlier validation process.

I don't need to be able to play the guitar to appreciate Eric Calpton's skills, the same applies with photography. WE

Just my opinion, but, maybe unless you have photos up, you shouldn't be allowed into the voting process.

I have recently received 3 "lacking interest" comments from the author of this thread..... it seems it is not only insects and flowers that are not appreciated - it is also ducks!

Fair enough Wright. You are of course correct that it was unnecessary to personalise things in order to make my point. However, here we have a member who appears incapable of understanding that all types of photography are equally valid. Instead he displays a knee jerk reaction to one category. Fair game I say.

I am sorry, but I have sided with no one. Susan offered an explanation for your post that insinuated that your intention was meant to be light hearted and comical. I did not see it in that light.

Everyone is certainly entitled to offer their opinion. Escalating the discussion level to include direct (negative) references to another members entries was what I considered "mean spirited" (and unnecessary to make your point).

After my last post I have had several pm's from other members who have been abused by Atilla the Hun. Apparently he has taken to dishing out 1's with the "lacking interest" excuse. No further proof that an idiot is at work is required. All I can suggest is that those concerned report his actions to admin.

My response was not at all pompous or mean spirited. It was a response targeted at the author of this thread solely intended to demonstrate, albeit in a condescending and somewhat satirical way, what an obvious *** he was in making his ill thought out comments about the macro category. It seemed to me that he was saying that anyone indulging themselves in macro is wasting their time and energy because the end product has no real merit????

Wright, I'm quite surprised that you choose to side with this Jackass. I'll take no lectures from anyone when it comes to supporting the integrity of any genre. The guy who began this thread is the mean spirited one, or else he's simply loco. Recall his words.

Is this description of a voting session correct, or is it a pile of manure? Whenever I vote my experience is very different - I see random images from all genres. Should I pull my punches for the sake of political correctness or whatever to allow a cretin to air his distorted views with impunity - I don't think so.

Pompous is scoring Macros with a [b]2[/b] and leaving "lacking interest" comments!

You ought to go out and try taking a few Macros to give you more of an appreciation for the difficulty involved in taking such shots then maybe you wouldn't be so quick at insulting peoples work.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion and to score as you see fit but neither is likely to be respected! Though you probably expected that too!

I agree. There are far too many images of pesky no good smallish type beasties from the nether regions of Hell. Far too many. And on the same theme, what about all those dogs, and cats, domesticated or feral - don't they just make you sick. And what about shots from Zoo's and safari's - so repetitive. Pass the bucket. And don't get me started on birds - quelle horreur!!!! Bridges? They make me bilious. Piers make me puke. Viaducts are vomit inducing and Sunsets are sick central.

Lets all get together on this one and ban them all, and anything else anyone may have a slight aversion to. No one signs up to have their eyes assaulted by all this guff and stuff.

We should all seek to expand our photographic horizons, perhaps in the manner of the author of this thread. With great technique he has shot an old car, quite static, in a nondescript urban setting and added a quirky title that implies a certain nostalgia. Many would say the shot has little merit - but what do they know? Its not so easy to take a shot of a parked car AND append a nostalgically apt title. So lets dispense entirely with the Macro Landscape and head out into the streets to shoots all those old photogenic rustbuckets and pretend to ourselves that our work has merit. Woo-Hoo.

Hi Atilla! Interesting assessment of the site. Got to tell you that there have been times I wish I had a fly swatter myself. But you can always learn something from an image even if it is something that makes you nauseous. Composition for example: Centering the subject and blocking out its more interesting background/environment might be one thing. Just a thought. Maybe open your mind a bit to other things you could learn. Enjoy!

Guczo, you will find a variety of images here at DA, some you may not care for, others you may love. That's the joy of photography, everyone has a favorite subject. Some love bugs, some love flowers, some love landscapes... vote accordingly. If you dont like flies, and other creepy crawlies, vote on the clarity, sharpness, colors, lighting, composition, exposure, etc, of the image.

Unfortunately you cannot pick the images you want to vote on if you've reached the buffer in the ALL category. We've all voted on the same images you have, or will be voting on those images.

Personally, I'm not a fan of flies & spiders, but I voted on many fly and spider images, and although I didnt care for the subject, they were fine examples of good photography, and my vote reflected that!

I am not really a lover of insects in the flesh but really do love to see the wonderful close ups of them and agree we have some marvellous examples from Glyn and Deborah and others. There is no reason, however, that macro shots have to be just of either insects or flowers... macro photography can be of any subject. I wonder if we expect macro to be of insects or flowers and don't value other subjects as much?

Ditto, Kiwi, to me watch and vote for macro photography is something I look forward to everyday... and when it comes to "macro" photography there are two names that come up in my mind here, Glynn and Deborah for the stunning shots they have taken...:smooooth:

Sorry you feel that way, personally I've not experienced that problem and have been here for over a year now. I feel that DA offers a wide variety of photos for voting.
Are in the All Category when voting? or are you selecting Categories to vote in? That could explain why so many of the one variety come up for you.
