I recently found a blog that is devoted to judging and critiquing of photo you submit. JL Morris the owner of this blog has judged photography for 18 years. He is also the judge in the Ventura County Camera Club competition next month. Here is the link to the website DigaPixBlog

If you submit a photo, he will honestly evaluate the photo and write about it what, in his opinion, was good and if there are any distraction. Sometimes he creates a markup to explain it better. At other times he includes a edit version to show a different crop or edit.

If you want you can write a comment too, or ask question.
My Play.......

I really don't understand this - it was doing sooooo well and leading the Dig Art Category until all of a sudden it received a 5 from a high weighted member. That very member was mentioned several times within a recent debate thread by the person I was having the debate with.

It makes me wonder whether her vote was a fair reflection on the image or ......not. So, I've decided to put it up for critique before it's automatically disgarded by the auto-archiving system due to receiving such a low score.

Not to worry however as I've already uploaded a similar image with slightly different colouring ( I sincerely hope that's why it was scored down? )

Here is the image and below it you can read the comments I've attached to it. Certainly in no way detrimental to the original image or to it's photographer. On the contrary, I think in many ways it highlights how the original image could have been even better...don't you think?

As I've said in my comments, it's the very first time I've conjured up such an image using so many of my own images and it was a lot of fun and I learned loads from it.

Here is the image - I decided to call it "My Play":

Comments:
We all get great ideas from other people's images when we vote.

I voted an image with a six and it caused a rumpus - the image went on to win a Daily Signature Award. So to compliment that image I came up with this one.

My Sea, is of course not as dramatic as the original - my fence is made of iron and although it won't prevent the sea from penetrating the land beyond, it's sure to stand proud no matter what!

I had to raise my Sun a little higher as it was difficult to see but the shadow that it's created from the fence I feel is rather more exciting.

I've used parts of 7 different photos to create this and I've never done anything like it before.

I thought I'd turn the negative experience from the rumpus into something positive and learn something from it - this is the result.

Feedback is very welcome! (This is all tongue in cheek by the way! :-) LOL )

I'd really appreciate any feedback and ways in which I could improve on what is basically my first real attempt at producing a Dig Art Image.

Thank you in advance!

All the best!!

Sandy

A bit of fun

Just wondering what everyone thought of this, I call it "Waves Of Sunset." It's obviously a sunset photo, I have tweaked the saturation a little, but I then flipped the photo over which to me gives it a brand new perspective. I think it makes what would have been a normal sunset sky into something a little more interesting. I know some people will say that it isn't real photography as it doesn't accurately show what was seen at the time. If that is the case, then maybe it should be called art (oops, have I opened a can of worms here). Anyway, your thoughts on the photo would be very appreciated.
Many thanks

Ian

What do you think

Hi everyone, this is the first time I have posted a pic on this forum. I took this one at Shinewater in Eastbourne at sunrise. I call it "The March Of Progress" due to the pylons going off into the distance. Your views and opinions are very welcome. We don't seem to have this problem with any other category.

However, the photo below is one that has so far collected eight votes. 3 x 8, 1 x 7 and 3 x 6. The 8th vote was a score of 5 so I asked if they could elaborate.

This is their reply:
Gladly - I rated this image a five (below average). First, I don't really see what is unexpected. I guess it is meant to be the motion-blurred boat going under the bridge. Second, the image, while in focus and reasonably exposed has no real interest. Not something I would expect to see entered in a photo competition. Hence, I issued my rating of a five.

Title: Drip.......Drip.......Whoosh!

That person is certainly entitled to their opinion of course but in my eyes it was unexpected and fits into the category comfortably and I certainly think it was worthy of entering into the Unexpected Category competition here on DA as indeed did those that had voted it 7 and 8's.

So I'd like to put it out to the forum and ask these two questions:

1. Do you consider this shot to comply with your own interpretation of Unexpected? (Please feel free to elaborate if you wish)

2. Is this shot "worthy" of entry into the Unexpected Category here at DA?

Thanks in advance for your help with this as it may help clarify my own interpretation of the category and indeed may help others too.

.

Inconspicuous Pink Rose

I always thought that this was a good shot of a rose, but it did not make it into the ranks of award winners. I posted this and the first three votes were two 5's and a 6. It makes me think that my judgement is questionable when images I thought would perform better don't. I need advice/opinions.

I did not really do anything to this image but would like to know what you all would do to improve this..I wont be entering here at DA ..dont know if I will put it up anywhere but my main purpose is to get this lad a great piccie of himself..

And I asked if he minded me puttin it up and asking for this advice and he does not..( he better not lol cause he eats enough of my food lol..yes he is a relative)

Okay he is legally blind, but you mostly can't tell, he has little vision in one eye..Now the challenge is that when he looks at the camera or at anything , he has to position his better eye just so to see things which, is usually in an upward direction..So when looking at the camera his eyes are up and he does not like this at all.. it also happens when I have him look slightly to the side...So he was just sittin there today and I thought wow that is a nice pose ..snap snap..

it was not exactly a portrait and not exactly a candid and of course a very dry year here so the lawn looks like garbage.. I do not know what to do with this shot or even if it is decent..so all your opinions are welcomed and appreciated..:D

What is this funkyness?

Okay here is a photo..don't know what I can do with it but I would like to know specifically what this funkyness is,,,is there a term for it or is it just due to the specific circumstances this photo was taken under and it's subject?..
The weird look it has on the top of the bud to the left of the butterfly,,,I know the tips are very light/white and perhaps it is just the bkrnd ? or is this a technical issue, camera settings?..The whole bud just looks odd to me..

Thanks for your thoughts.

Here are the settings on the original , which all I did to this one was adjust levels a little and cropped/sharpened..
Shooting Date/Time 7/14/2007 10:00:04 AM
Shooting Mode Manual Exposure
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/125
Av( Aperture Value ) 7.1
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
ISO Speed 100
Lens EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Focal Length 100.0 mm
Reflection, What ya all think?

Hi

Ones again I tried takin' some pictures in my garden.
This was very hard, the drops was so tiny:p

Here we go:

Trond Stegarud

Hi, want some feed on this photo, im kinda new at this:)

Hi

Like I said, I want some feeback on this photo. This church was in the middle of downtown, so I couldn't get a shot of the whole thing without the image being skewed in weird ways (I think I was a little off center when I did).

But I was able to get 2 different ones while standing directly across the street, and this is what I got.

Let me know what you think!
(the lines on the bricks seem to be some kind of illusion, they aren't there on the originals that are on my computer, but appeared when compressed, and there were lines on the final one, but disappeared when I compressed it for the internet.)

Joni

Could I have your point of view on this?

Ballad of the Balloon Flower

And so what do you all think of this???
