The image at the top seems to have a background that is not balanced out.  It is very dark in the lower left and much brighter in the upper right.  I pulls my attention away.  I too struggle with flower shots.  There are several people on DA that are great with flowers.  I would look through the catagory top 100 in flowers and see what they have in common.  What you like and don't.  Then go from there.

Your image of the carnation isn't bad at all IMO. I think it's a little dark and needs some sharpening and maybe the red is a little too red.

If I was you, I would download Picassa, which is a free download (at least I think or maybe just a free trial). It's not as sophisticated as PS but it's very easy to make the most common adjustments. I downloaded it the other day because I was at my mother's house shooting some pics and she doesn't have PS on her PC. I was actually impressed with Picassa for it's simplicity and ability to make decent adjustments with really no hard work at all.
I am going to download it for my Mac (I think they make a mac version) and use that for things that don't need any major corrections or edits.

I think picasa is awesome..wish it were just a wee more sophisticated but I love what it does for what it is...have been using it this whole time..

Trying to figure out some issues so just uninstalled it today again but I would recommend it for anyone who needs something to start or to check out..

It is Picasa 2 I believe ,,the latest free one..

Thanks, guys.  I have Picasa but it isn't nearly as sophisticated as Photoshop.  I prefer to stick with Photoshop as I've been using it for 9 years now and am used to the way it works and I love my layers.   I really don't think that post processing is my problem; I believe the problem is my monitor.  I ordered a whole new set up this week and it should come soon.
