OK I am fairly new at the site, recently posted a pic and noticed that there were 2 votes:  1 raw and 1 signature, both with the exact same rating.  Read the descriptions of how the voting works but still wondering

If a signature member votes for you does that also count as a raw vote?  Or is this just a total coincidence that both voted the same rating?

Thanks peeps...in advance

Okay! There are signature awards, which are determined by votes from the highest ranking 7.5% of the membership... no capping of weight to calculate the weighted average. And, there are regular awards, which are determined by votes from all members. Regular raw votes are registered at the actually weight of the voting member, if less than 25, or subject to a capped weight of approximately 25 if the voting members weight is greater than that.

Currently, signature members are members with approximately a voting weight (a product of votes cast and awards won) of 25 or greater.

So, when a signature member casts a vote on an image, it will register as a raw vote and a signature vote. But, when a non-signature member casts a vote, it will only register as a raw vote and be included in the calculations for regular awards only.

The line determining a signature voter has recently moved higher due to Eric's purging of inactive accounts.

The concept is to recognize the contributions of voting activity and awards won as qualifying criteria for having a say in the premium awards.

I wish WE was around to help explain this. He has a better grasp of the mathematics, the history and the humor.

thanks Hahn...you answered my question.

I was not sure if a signature also counted as a raw vote.  Just was not sure if there were 2 different peeps votes or just the one person.

thanks bunches!

Are  you telling me that when a member with a rating of say...243 votes on an image, that vote will raise or lower the vote by such a percentage as if 243 votes were cast for it?

For example; if someones weight is 243 and they vote a "9" on an image...is that "9" calculated into the average as if 243 "standard" users voted for it?

This is direct from the About page

The accumulation of points represents a weight assigned to you for each vote you cast. For example, if you have reached level 2 status (account weight = 2) your vote will have double the power of a level one user. Thus, should you cast a vote of 8 for an image, it will be the equivalent of two level 1 users. See the formula below for a precise understanding of how your vote affects an image score:

[(sum of votes) + (current vote * current weight)] / (total weights so far + current weight)

So, in basic terms, your vote weight value equates to casting that amount of votes all at once.

Edited to add: Of course, as discussed, this does not apply for standard votes as they are capped at the breakpoint weight between standard and signature. See the Site Overview for details on that.

Thanks for your reply...

....so it is my understanding that for the Sig votes, the total of the user casting the vote is not capped..so all of their "weight" is counted..even if it is say... 212?

On that note, the same voter is capped at about 30 in the standard category?

...I'm just trying to get a hand on how the site works.

Thanks.

Signature votes represent the 'essence' of DA. Those votes are fully unrestricted and all of the weight of the voter is used in computing the image score. It once was the case that standard votes operated in the same way (but included all voters, not just signature level). As it turned out, the winners for each class were often the same as the image scores were nearly identical between standard and signature score.

To summarize.
Signature Score is computed with:
Signature votes, unrestricted weight

Standard Score is computed with:
Standard votes, unrestricted weight
Signature Votes, restricted weight
