Hi there! Welcome to DA!!!

I have a shepherd too!! they're wonderful pets and companions!

In this photo of yours, it would have been nice to see a full view of the dog splashing around in the water.

Hi sherry

Thanks for the welcome oboy!

YEAH a wider shot would of been better but "in the moment" of this MENTAL dog she tends not to stay still very long. Getting up close was a lot more personal and those eyes just had to be taken up close ....they crack me up. Very suspicious dogs german shepherds, which is a good thing. they wont take their eyes off of you.

The reviews on this canon EOS 400d about the standard lens is a little over the top I'm finding them decent enough for the price. The result of that picture says it all in terms of light and contrast quality...

Sherry what camera would you recommend in the pro range?

I think it's a fine photo. Exposure and sharpness are good. I sort of agree with seeing the whole animal but then you have a good close up of the face so that's kind of hard. Obviously if you were down lower, you could have got both but then YOU probably would have been wet, or worse, your camera. So, technically it's pretty good. It might not win image of the year but it seems you know how to use a camera pretty well so keep it up and just take lots of images!

Please do not post images for critique in the forums while they are in the voting pool.  The competitions are supposed to be anonymous.

I think the shot would have more impact if I could see the dog's eyes more directly.

I'm confused...
When posting a piccie in the competition you can check the "critique" box. So, while it is in competition it can also receive critique from the community. It is the same thing as posting in the forum as their name is attached to the piccie in that critique section.

So what's the difference?

Brian...welcome to DA!

I don't think I have a "Critique" box to check.  That must be only for subscribers.  But I can ask a question so I guess that amounts to the same thing.

To me the difference is about how individuals want to conduct themselves when the system gives alternatives.  Maybe etiquette, or just plain good manners if the difference.

If you put any stock in the value of anonymous voting, you won't reveal your identity by posting a shot in the forums or the Critique section while it's in the voting pool.  If anonymous voting means nothing to you, then the system allows you to bypass it, and potentially to abuse it.

If you think that constructive criticism should be a free flowing, give and take, commodity then you won't need to ask for it in more than one venue, or for more of it than you are willing to return.  Photos in the voting pool can receive comments from voters.  Does a person also need to ask for them in other ways?

Just because you can do something does mean that it is a good thing to do.
