Any opinions you have about this image at all would be appreciated.  Don't feel you have to be an expert or go into great depth.  Thanks.

Hey Hollars,

Okay since you put it that way lol.. I think the only thing for this pic is the lighting,,,so if you could move the sun over to the other side and in front , this would be a ten ...It is actually quite a great shot imo, perfect comp. and geesh it was lookin right at ya...how awesome...The only thing is is the ligting is somewhat flat on the side where focus and detail is of great importance... I do not know what you could do to improve this pic  in software but it is a great shot just for catching it the way you did.....

just my thoughts..not that they helped

I agree with Tonka, the harsh lighting is the only problem.  Focus looks just right, background is not distracting, you froze the action at a moment that produced an interesting shot.  But there is a very wide variation between the bright highlights and the dark shadows.  I would suggest you try a slight a adjustment in Curves to tone down the brighter parts and lighten up the darker parts.  If you can get that gull to pose for you again, ask him to move around so the sun is at your back.  The other thing you can do is to use flash to light up the shadowed side of the gull just enough to balance the ambient light so your shot looks less backlit.  If I could do it as well as I can think thru it after the fact, I'd win a lot more awards here.  It's not an easy technique to master, to use fill flash for daytime action shots, but you don't have to do it perfectly to see improvement in your images.
