Just received a comment back telling me.....

"It's a nice photo but to me the color seems a little dull and it didn't "WOW" me...."

Okay, no problem with the "WOW" part. I already know this guy does not like any of my subject material and notches his vote down when he sees my Colorado images. That's not the issue.

The issue is.... the image on my monitor is vibrant in color.... almost oversaturated..... definitely not "dull". The colors are one of the assets of that particular image. I suspect the gentleman does not see the same colors on his monitor. Whose problem is this? Well, it's mine... because I receive the vote and comment from this very active voter. And, there's nothing I can do about it when someone else's monitor is poorly calibrated. But, my reason for posting this thread is because I strongly suspect the gentleman is using a browser which is not color managed. He has another layer of difficulty, beyond a poorly calibrated monitor.

There is a webpage which can test your browser and monitor's compatibility with modern photography. The first image on the page linked below should show all quadrants the same

If you are not using a color managed browser, you will not see the colors intended to be seen by the image's author. Is your browser color managed?

I might be adding hot water to the kettle but I was wondering...if a browser is color managed then it adjusts the pictures and changes them from the normal view of the photograph so wouldn't that make some photos that have not so good image color look better and get them a higher score?

There is a difference in a lot of the photos that I see on the site. Some like Richards are natural colors that are usually seen through the naked eye, others are HD which intensify the images to colors I have never seen except on photographs. Some are dark, some are light and it goes on.

If the browser changes the settings to match what it feels the image looks best at and you aren't seeing the pictures with the same settings every time, then wouldn't that be unfair to the photographer because it does not show the true image in comparison with others?

I do notice a difference when I switch to using different computer monitors and that is to be expected but if these were actual prints that we were judging we would not have the ability to alter each image color for the best view and it does not seem fair to do it here either.

Just a thought to consider

Ideally, in a perfect world, everyone would have calibrated monitors.... calibrated to some uniform standard. I'd guess this will never happen, as monitors (and ambient light when viewing a monitor) vary widely.

The color managed browser issue is a bit different. The goal is to have a photographer prepare an image with an attached ICC profile. In theory, those with color managed browsers will see the same colors, saturation and hue as the photographer who prepared the image.

I don't think an image with poor colors will ever see improvement from a color managed browser. But, images with good color, saturation and hue will appear as intended to viewers with a modern, color managed browser. Those without a color managed browser may see something quite different

Okay, so my monitor shows very deep rich color...the monitors at school are very dull colors, my laptop has a washout appearance which lightens the shadows ...
seriously, I think my colors are very nice especially having seen other systems...I believe I did calibrate my monitor and have used an online tool before that showed the monitor test had good results...(it was awhile ago and can't remember the site)

according to this test my monitor is not icc ready..

Now What?

Have you enabled the color management capability of FireFox 3? It is turned off by default.

Here's a simple test to check your gamma setting which if set wrong can alter the colours/colors seen on your monitor also further down the page is a part on calibration.
