1. what is a "view" and what does it do for you?
2. where is the appropriate place to say thank you for comments or votes?
3. does a wrong category notice hurt you?
4. is it OK to just abstain from voting for photos rather than giving them a low score?
5. can you view sequential images in one category when voting?
plenty more question where these came from, but this is enough for now.
anyone care to weigh in, please and thank you?

Welcome to Daily Awards Tocky...

1. what is a "view" and what does it do for you?

A view is the number of times an image has been viewed outside of voting.  When an image is presented for voting it is not counted as a view. A view is counted for a non voting look at your image.

.

2. where is the appropriate place to say thank you for comments or votes?

You may reply to any comment you receive. There is a reply link were the comment is listed with your image.  I would not really think it appropriate to "Thank" people for their votes.  Voting is part of the Daily Awards experience and is expected from everyone.

.

3. does a wrong category notice hurt you?

No, the wrong category tick is just a suggestion

.

4. is it OK to just abstain from voting for photos rather than giving them a low score?

It is preferable to rate every image that is presented on your voting screen.  Passing over images of lower quality in an effort to avoid a lower vote is neither fair to the submitting photographer or the rest of the contestants in the contest.

.

5. can you view sequential images in one category when voting?

Not really sure what you mean here.  You can vote by category, but it is more fair to all the images it the contest to vote via the ALL category option.

Thanks very much for your help with my questions. On the last one, what I meant was....
I go to vote, I pick a category, then I vote, then if I want to look at the next photo in that category, I can't pick it again, I have to pick another category, then go back to the first..... although from your answer, perhaps that's not what the framers of the site want me to do. Sometimes I just feel like looking at cityscapes for a while, or still lifes.........does this make the question clear?

maybe i am supposed to be voting on every photo?
that would be hard for me, but if that is what you intend, please let me know.
perhaps I would mask my identity as it would be difficult for me to totally honest otherwise. I would appreciate your advice on this.
thank you

I think everyone wants your honest opinion and vote. It takes a while for anyone to acclimate to this site though.  From personal experience I can tell you that what was considered an average vote in another site seems to be a bit low on this one.  So you will encounter people asking you to explain how you came with the number.

The only thing you can do is go with the flow and make sure you are being fair when you vote.  That way when people ask you why, you can be honest with your response.

There will be some very strong worded requests sent your way, there will be some people thanking you for your vote and comments, there will be some people asking for advice on how to improve their work.

There will also be people willing to help out and people who are here just to get the awards.  Keep in mind that for the most part it is a great place to be, share your work and learn from others.

I am learning bunches myself.

I participate in several member voting sites. I use the exact same voting scale on all of those sites. There are some significant differences to note, between sites. For example, the DPChallenge site has a full spectrum of images in the voting pool for each challenge during the entire duration of the challenge. That includes some very poor images and some images intended to attract lowest scores, so they can finish at the bottom, with a brown ribbon. (I don't understand why DPC tolerates that childish behavior!) Anyway, that site has me voting from 1 to 10 in a normal distribution curve with mean around 5.2.

At DailyAwards, there is a constant filtering of images available for votes in the voting pool. There is auto archiving at the gates. There is auto-deletion of images with stable scores below 5.0000. There is plenty of self-archiving and self-deletion. This is all good! It manifests itself as a much higher caliber of images appearing in our voting windows. I wouldn't have it any other way. But, new members wrongly assume that the average vote is higher here than other websites. The site statistics do not show the images that have been deleted via methods involving deletion, mentioned above.

To reiterate, I vote the same scale on several contest sites. It's important to be consistent. That's the part of fair and objective that some people miss

Thanks for your kind reply, Luguer.
I have added you to my buddy list for future questions if that's ok.
I think this site has a great format that engages and challenges all of us, and I hope I can do my part. I just want to win enough to be able to put up some more pictures, but that's good, too.... it makes me select only my best.
Thanks again for your support.

Thank you once again, Richard. I can see that it takes a while to get acclimated here, but I do understand the value of this format. So a vote of 5 does not press me for a comment but it does not help to weed out the lesser quality photos either (if I understand this correctly). I am not sure that I feel qualified to sit in judgment but will do my best.
I appreciate your help.
