I have been told to take all of my photos down until I get them on to a site that offers copy rights . most of the photos on here can be down loaded by voters as there is no copy right .Not sure if this will be of concern to most but if you are selling photos you might want to have them water marked . Can the site stop people from down loading our photos .

The site cannot stop anyone from downloading photos that are displayed.  Anything that appears on your screen has already been downloaded into your computer. That is the only way it shows!

.

Also, you do not relinquish your image rights through posting them in a photo contest.

.

Still, there is little value in an image that is at a screen resolution and posted at 640 pixels.  Certainly not "print quality" anyway.  Any type of watermark of copyright that does not greatly detract from an images presentation can often be removed if someone is so inclined.  As well, many voters will reduce ratings for images that contain copyright or other photographer identifiers.  I know that I do.

.

If you are truly concerned about image theft, posting images on any public website might not the best direction for your image presentations.

.

edit add - It looks like you deleted your photos anyway - at least any award images and archived one.

At 72 ppi, images are not of much value to others, even when uploaded at large sizes. I mean you simply can't print a high resolution image from what we upload here.

That said, the Internet version could be stolen and uploaded to other sites and presented as the thief's own work. That has happened to many websites and some participants. Other people's image have been uploaded at DA by someone other than the image owner. Admin has dealt harshly with those few. Other websites will also take appropriate action when advised of the crime. You risk your right of participation if you steal others' images and present them as your own.

Some important considerations:

1. If an image can be displayed on a computer monitor, it can be stolen. Efforts to restrict downloads of images are futile. Screen saves are always possible.

2. If you have a watermark or copyright or signature on the image, it can be removed.

3. For images in the viewing window (not the voting window), the image resizer uses compression to somewhat or significantly reduce the image quality.

4. You can embed your copyright in the detailed EXIF data. Some thieves forget to look there. (Not too many people know about this possibility of a digital watermark. I do embed a digital copyright on all my images.)

5. If you establish your ownership of digital images by documenting and dating copies of the images and placing the custody of this documentation in the hands of an officer of the court (an attorney), you can much improve your case when attempting to recover financial damages from unauthorized use
.

edited to add: Wright responding much more quickly than I did this morning. I agree with his comments completely.

Richard, just a comment regarding one of your points; there is no explict rule on the site, unless this has changed since the time I asked, stating that you are not allowed to watermark or put your name on an image, which by the way, is a rule to which I particularly would totally oppose. Of course many members decide to deduct points from photographers who sign their pictures, which in my opinion, is absurd considering that any artist is entitled to sign their own work. I know the point has been debated before many times, and there are many reasons why it is not encouraged to do so, but there is no forbidding rule about it. I never deduct, or increase in any case, my scoring just because the name appears, sometimes, actually, it even forms part of the composition itself. Regards, Jorge.

Maybe there should be a rule at DailyAwards.

Two other photo contest websites, in which I participate, explicitly prohibit watermarks. Phrases extracted from their rules and guidelines listed below.

DPChallenge.com
"You may not... add text to your entry or its border during editing. This includes copyright statements."

DigitalImageCafe.com
"REMINDER: No Watermarks or Signatures are permitted on POTD submissions!"

In general, it makes common sense to prohibit any identification of image authorship, as it could influence votes.... one way, or another.

My RAW format image processor, Apple's Aperture, makes it easy to tag all images with all kinds of data. I would guess that other applications, like Adobe's Lightroom, have a similar capability. Technically, I am placing my copyright notice in the IPTC metadata file. What is metadata.

There is detailed information here:

Exchangeable image file format

Aperture's capability list:

Footnote: If you use a postprocessing application, like Adobe's Photoshop, choosing the "Save for web..." utility will erase the EXIF file and metatags
