Thanks for that link Rocket. Reading the info sounds like a very good camera. Especially like the kit lens having IS.

Hi Rocket,
Looks to me like an upgraded version of the 400D with a bit if IS thrown in. Can't see the proposed attraction.... must be something Canon must have thought of.
Am a bit surprised though.T alking about lenses, I am wondering where Canon will be in a few years when there are so many cameras coming out wit the IS system based in the camera itself.
On the other hand......any news of the proposed 5D MK11. Now that would be interesting !

regards

The Canon 5D MKII is projected to be announced at Photokina in late September. Maybe available in stores in October. That's a market timing strategy.... (just past the "nice weather" season in the northern hemisphere).

Speculation on the 5D MKII is that it will have a snappier fps rate. And, probably a price tag of $3000 for the body.

This isn't in-camera IS. It's just thrown in that using the 18-55 IS gets you 4 stops of shutter speed.

This looks like a camera meant for people who don't want to drop the money on a 450d since it's talking about the lowest entry price point.

It is not likely that Canon will shift to placing the image stabilization or vibration reduction in the body. Seems like that would require a major retooling... not on the horizon, but will be closely watched. I certainly agree that it makes sense to have the IS system in the body, rather than in several lenses. But, I'm sure financial considerations will prevail.

Regarding the price of the new Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS - EOS 1000D, some people were expecting an entry level pricing of $400, but rumors are it will likely be $600 for the body. (about $700 with the kit lens) That makes it a likely replacement for the Xti.

The thing I do not understand is the pricing.

.

Snip from press release

Pricing & Availability

The EOS 1000D is available from the end of July priced at the following:
EOS 1000D body only £499.99 / €649.99 RRP inc. VAT
EOS 1000D 18-55mm IS lens kit £579.99 / €749.99 RRP inc. VAT

.

Canon EOS 450D - £449.00
or 450D + 18-55mm IS from £494.99
and Canon accessories at low prices
www.parkcameras.com

.

The 450D price above is the latest street price that is available now in the UK. Although the rrp is £599. So the launch price for a new entry level DSLR is more than the 450D but with a lower spec???. I guess the street price will be a lot lower on the 1000D after launch.

.

Cheers

Thanks Richard. An interesting point to watch. I wonder how long Canon can hold out on a camera based IS system. I suppose they have newly introduced the 18--55 IS because it comes as optional package with so many of their camera models.
I did get the feeling that the EOS 1000D was replacing the rebel Xti ( 400D).. can't really see the point to bring out another similar model so soon.

Rumour has it that the new 5D Mk11 will also have the integrated cleaning system. I wonder on your thoughts about this. The thought of attempting sensor cleaning makes me very nervous whereas you are already expert on this !
