Does anyone know a reputable place where I can 'afford' to but photoshop? I've been working with the software provided with my camera and it is pretty good, but starting to give my computer some problems. I'd like to get the photoshop CS3 but when I look it up on the web, it's $600 to $650. I can neither justify nor afford that.

Assuming you edit on a PC (windows)

A very good replacement for Photoshop if you don't want the expense but want most of the functionality is Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 At $79 it's hard to beat. You can try it for free for a limited time. You can find info on it HERE.

There is also an Open source program called Gimp that is feature rich but has a bit steeper learning curve. I think Rocket uses it and like it.

Right on Chris - Henrik (Oboy) also uses GIMP and I used it before I switched to Photoshop and PhotoImpact 12. Last one also very cheap (I don't know in your currencies, but I paid something like R300-00 ( we're at about R7 to the $). It has a lot of automated features, but you can also choose to work only manually like on photoshop. I would really recommend it especially if you're only starting out on post processing. Full product name is Ulead PhotoImpact 12.

Thanks guys! I had forgotten about Corel. I worked with some of their stuff years ago and was well pleased with it. I've never heard of GIMP but I'll check it out. Being one of those fixed income types, I just can't go mega$ for a hobby item.

I've had plenty of software from this outfit, including my current version of CS3. I can't afford to look gift horses in the mouth.

I think we had this discussion before not to have links to illegal software here.

I use GIMP www.gimp.org and I am happy with it. If you like the PhotoShop GUI, then you can use www.gimpshop.com
