Sure glad I am not a new member!  Not a very welcoming thread when someone's motives or participation is questioned in the forum during their first days on the site.

.

It is important to attract new members, it is even more important to retain them and develop a wider base of contribution at the site.

.

Many new members vote a lot because they are enthusiastic and because they can.  Remember new members have the entire voting pool before them.  They are not restricted by the buffers that limit the votes of many active voters.

.

New members don't have 100's of images in the contest collecting votes.  They are limited on their initial entries.  As well, they may be unaware of the archive function and could take time to earn awards.

.

A little more tolerance and a little less wariness might go a long way in welcoming new members and improving the site experience for everyone.  WE

A little more moderation and balance on the part of the new member would result in a more sustainable situation and encourage their long term participation and success.

I enthusiastically welcome new members. I simply do not understand their need to exhaust the voting pool in a few short days. Hey, they aren't hurting me. I fear some are focusing too much on massive voting sessions and not enough on balanced participation.

Seems to me we have a responsibility to help the new members develop into solid citizens of the community, rather than flashes in the pan.

I agree Richard.

Altho.... for awhile I had been saying 'Welcome to DA' on voters of weights 1 or 2. But when a 2 weight came back said that she "was not new, and had been here a long time"...rather indignantly......I now reserve the welcome for 1's only.

But yes, absolutely.......we should welcome new members and encourage them to not just vote, but to enter photos.......and participate in the forum.
