This is just my opinion, but with thee types of photojournalism shots, it's best to keep them all color or all B&W. I used to do the selective desaturation all the time, but to me the novelty quickly wore out. I know some people might think it's cool, but let the photo speak louder than the trick.

I still Love Selective desaturation and Will, yours were awesome...

I think it takes a trained eye to know in what situation it is best to use this "trick" and appropriately applied can really make some impressionable images.

that being said, in your image, the color looks very nice but the BW tones also look very good.

the thing is though, usually , very specific parts or a part is left in color...not just a circle somewhere in the pic..I tend to like this application of , for example..just choosing the fireman and leaving him in color with everything else BW..or just the fire engine left in color...but not a mix of different objects...

This looks like the selective desaturation tool in Picasa,,,,I normally use it only when I can effectively choose something round to leave in color because this tool is limited in Picasa to just a circle..

I am not sure if there are other free programs or shareware that would have a more flexible selective desaturation tool with it. so that you could highlight any shape/s to leave in color such as the outline of the firefighter..

All Just my opinion.

So true. If you decide on doing the selective desat, decide why you're doing it and what part of the image you want to stand out by doing it.

I took a peek at this image and the question that came to my mind was "OK, what is the photographer trying to say with this image?"  It seems a bit vague to me.  I think I'd prefer it all BW.
