| I have noticed that when I give a vote of 5 or 4, I get emails wanting to know why I gave that level of vote when everyone else has voted it much higher. I responed and pretty much get told off when I explain why. I have taught photography for over 15 years. I look for a number of things when giving my vote and have learned being honest dose not pay here. Everyone wants a high vote and if you give a vote under 6 i get hit with a lot of email. I believe I will pull my self from this site.

wishmyr (2/24/2008) I have noticed that when I give a vote of 5 or 4.....
The voting range is 1 to 10. Nothing wrong with casting an occasional low score vote, as long as your vote distribution covers the entire array of images appearing in your voting window. In general, you should be casting as many "9" and "10" votes as you do sub "6". That would be fair and objective because there are some excellent images in the contest. If, with your 15 years of experience, you are finding that "all" the images in the contest are "below average", then you will likely encounter some resistance.
Seems like you might be qualified to offer words of encouragement and suggestions for improvement in conjunction with your lowest scores. However, your credibility would improve markedly if you participated in the contest by submitting some of your own images. As of this writing, your portfolio is empty. (It appears you have received some votes, so you have entered something in the past.)

I think when you go to someone's profile, the only images available to view are ones that have won awards and their archived shots.
You know, wherever you go you're going to run into people who aren't so easy to get along with. I don't think I've ever argued with anyone here about a score they've given me and I know there have been times, after voting on a shot and finding out it was from someone I admired a lot, I would just cringe! (because I'd scored them lower than the average and I felt it was someone who knew more about photography than myself simply because they were more successful here than I was - plus they had the shots in their porfolios to prove it!) I just knew I was going to get a comment request and I would feel too stupid to answer. It's happened a time or two and always met with calm maturity. Both times were from the two people I consider the best on the site so I was very pleasantly surprised (and relieved).
I sit on my fingers a lot around here ..........when I get the 5 or 6 from a 1 or 2 weight member with nothing in their portfolio to look at - and on a shot that's overall rating is the the high 7's or mid 8's...........or when I get a comment 'lacking interest' on my highest rated active bird shot (8.6514).
When I get really angry here (which happens a lot these days), I walk away from the computer and do something else. By the time I come back, I'm still not happy but I'm not so angry anymore and it's easier to keep my mouth shut

| Perhaps it's not so much the low vote that bothers members but a low vote from someone who does not have any images to view in their profile. If you expect excellence, you have to be able to offer it. With 15 years of experience, perhaps a low vote would be a bit warmer with some helpful feedback. Also, if you find that your votes are always much lower than what the image is averaging, perhaps you should reevaluate your voting scale. I feel that my voting average is probably lower than the site average but I'm careful about being hypercritical. I do give out 3s, 4s, 5s, and even have given out 2s before but it is not without careful consideration. As Richard stated, there is a 1-10 voting scale here so you shouldn't find it hard to use 10s, 9s, and 8s, as well.

| I agree with Leighann - I've done the same thing a few times - given a score of 6 or 7 then seen who it was and felt terrible! Then went and checked the full-scale image and wished I'd checked that out before voting...However as I am on dialup checking the full-scale size is not always option for me... Takes me ages to upload a 500kb photo to start with!!! There are quite a few members on this site who I really look up to as good photographers and I value their comments... If I get a low score from a low-voting member I not worry about it too much. If I get lots of 6's on my photos I usually just wish I had a better camera! LOL - but seriously I like this site as generally you get ideas how to improve... I've come across a few on here that you just can't please - but photography is also a personal thing and what one person likes another doesnt. regards, Kylie Smile - It makes people wonder what you have been up to
