Hi

I feel that there's still a lot of confusion with regards to the Unexpected category.

What meets with one person's interpretation seems to be a long way off in another person's view. We don't seem to have this problem with any other category.

However, the photo below is one that has so far collected eight votes. 3 x 8, 1 x 7 and 3 x 6. The 8th vote was a score of 5 so I asked if they could elaborate.

This is their reply:
Gladly - I rated this image a five (below average). First, I don't really see what is unexpected. I guess it is meant to be the motion-blurred boat going under the bridge. Second, the image, while in focus and reasonably exposed has no real interest. Not something I would expect to see entered in a photo competition. Hence, I issued my rating of a five.

Title: Drip.......Drip.......Whoosh!

That person is certainly entitled to their opinion of course but in my eyes it was unexpected and fits into the category comfortably and I certainly think it was worthy of entering into the Unexpected Category competition here on DA as indeed did those that had voted it 7 and 8's.

So I'd like to put it out to the forum and ask these two questions:

1. Do you consider this shot to comply with your own interpretation of Unexpected? (Please feel free to elaborate if you wish)

2. Is this shot "worthy" of entry into the Unexpected Category here at DA?

Thanks in advance for your help with this as it may help clarify my own interpretation of the category and indeed may help others too.

Well you do know that no matter what people will say,,others will always say the opposite ...right?..

And that is what makes us all different...our opinion....

that being said, I would like to give my opinion on this one as I believe I did just vote on this and gave it a good mark..and here is why.

I did notice it in the unexpected category ..I was indeed looking.......

It wasnt that the boat going by was unexpected, I was actually taken a bit back by the "look"..or color of the bridge..Where it meets the water has a glow about it and so does the color of the bridge..I was rather pleasantly surprised to see such a "warm" look for a place that normally is colder and indeed damp..This was dry and inviting and somewhat drawing me in...Then in the middle is the boat "whooshing" by while the bridge in the bkrnd is in the same crisp focus as the foreground giving that look of depth that I love...

I thought this was better than average and I was indeed not expecting  the "feel" this had for the subject matter..

BUT tis just my opinion and how I saw this image and so...just my opinion...  of course as always,,I am by no means an expert...

Just to save everyone the trouble of looking up this image to see who rated it a FIVE and ANSWERED the comment request I will take credit for both now. As well, I stand by my rating and the comment. While I don't mind that my vote or comment has become a forum topic, this seems like another example of a poor use of the comment request feature and to me supports the idea of divorcing comment requests from votes.

Frankly, after I looked at the vote details for this image, I wanted to comment request the three 8's and the 7 voters to see what qualities they saw in the photograph to deserve such high ratings. WE

I do believe I was one of the 8's ... So that is one opinion on the image...I thought it was just lovely the way it glowed!

And I am not bothered to be asked... or to justify/explain or discuss my vote..

Ask anytime.

I think the very definition of unexpected will result in everyone seeing "unexpected" in their own way.... Most of us can agree on what a portrait is, but we will all see "unexpected" based on our own unique experiences...... I'd be shocked if we all saw "unexpected" in the same things.....

just a thought,

IMHO, it could be "unexpected " but I would have to agree with WE about it's technical merit....the boat is in motion and does have motion blur.  I find that it is lacking interest as well...the colors and comp just don't appeal to me.
