I always thought that this was a good shot of a rose, but it did not make it into the ranks of award winners. What do you think was the deciding factor?

O, I know you are probably sick of my opinion but it just doesnt seem like anyone else much wants to give theirs lately..really not sure if it is just the time of the year or what..but here is mine..

First of all , I think that it is the bkrnd..I think for this subject the bkrnd needed to be all dark or all lighter...there are some interesting colors but not enough light to enhance the subject but rather distracts the eye....

Also the crop seems almost too close for this...the detail is wonderful, light on the subject is very nice so this would really stand out a bit further away with a completely black bkrnd..

Does that make sense?...WEll that is just what I see here...and just my opinion...I sure hope you get more.....

Thank you Tonka for your opinion. You know I always like to hear your opinion!

I was trying to create a more natural light effect, by darkening the background but not going all the way to black. I used a off centered composition to include some of the detail from the background to increase the DOF effect.

I think maybe a bit more light especially around the edges might be worth a try..I tend to like a bkrnd more so than just completely black though I do plenty of them..

personally I think that subtle colors and lighting in the bkrnd look beautiful so I like your concept..I would encourage you to keep trying different levels of lighting to come up with a perfect match ...

I also tend to like square crops on very round flowers..but again that is only my taste...

Oh just a thought here O....what about burning the darkest areas of the bkrnd while leaving the foliage a bit brighter?..just a thought ...

The bloom is wonderful and I bet there is a solution which would make this wonderful...
